I had bought a "whirlpool" labeled dehumidifier at lowe's last year and its the noisiest, rattling, squeaking, machine I have ever heard. I literally tossed it in the trash last week and bought a new "frigidaire" named from best buy and that thing is whisper quiet, like night and day compared to the other. Anyone else have similar experiences ?

Yeah, my parents tossed their old Coldspot for a 'White Westinghouse' years ago. Man, that thing's noisy as heck. One thing I DID do was run a hose to it so it drains outside without any intervention. If you've NOT done that, it's a really nice thing to have.

But yeah, at night, when I'm over there, I hear it pop on and off. No fun.

gansky / greg

Greg Nunn in Omaha has a really neat, pretty quiet vintage Frigidaire dehumidifier in his basement. I really liked it.

IIRC there is a DeLonghi brand dehumidifier that has a built in condesate pump. Add some hose, even if you can't normally drain by gravity..... and no need to empty.

I believe the DeLonghi is relatively quiet, as well.

I also have an Electrolux-made Frigidaire de-humi that I bought the second day I owned this house 9 years ago. It is loud, rattles and is all around just awful -- but it does work and I don't worry about it running constantly when I'm not home.

I use the 1955 Frigidaire from time to time - in the really wet months of Spring. There is no auto-cutoff when the tank is full so it makes me a bit nervous to leave it running unattended like the newer model.

Some clients of mine have a couple of brand new Kenmore units that are very nice - quiet, large tanks and easy to use digital controls.

YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I purchased a WP dehumidifier 3 years ago and the thing has to be the worst made. Rattley to the extreme. The thing does not vibrate, it downright shimmies. Even if you sit on it and try to supress the vibrations, the compressor and fan just roar. And, it is built backwards -- the thing sucks in air from the front where the controls are and blows it out the back where the collection tank is. I have put up with it for 3 years now, and it is going to the curb here shortly.

I missed out on a vintage Frigidaire dehumidifier at an estate sale this last weekend. I couldn't believe this size of it, it was huge, but for $10 it would have been a steal.

thanks Peter, YES is right

Peter you couldn't have said it better, thats EXACTLY what I went through with mine, I actually put up with it for two years and this would have been the third and I just had it .......... so I am thrilled with my new "Frigidaire" from best buy, its very quiet and very solid, no rattles, squeaks, vibrations. I can only assume all those used Whirlpools I see for sale here and there are from unhappy consumers....

We had a kenpool version that was recalled.. I threw it out cause it sucked soo bad..Got amaytag to replace it and haven't used it at all in 2 years

I've had the Kenmore-branded version of the linked Whirlpool unit since around 9/11 and I'm not thrilled with it.

It collects water well enough, but it's quite noisy (to a point of distraction)...

Also, I'd initially liked the design of the front grille, but they are the exact size and composition of miniblinds....I should waste time dusting them weekly? They get FILTHY....

Is this the model you are guys are discussing (and I am whining about)?

TRY IT FIRST .............

The "Frigidaire" I bought at best buy was plugged in on display so I could try it out first and you can rest assure I would have returned it the same day if it sounded like that Whirlpool. You know I didn't even mention before but I actually tore apart the Whirlpool and put foam and rubber bushings between the screws to quiet it down and it DID NOT WORK. I should have returned it. aahhh, c'est la vie. Live and learn.

I bought a Whirlpool dehumidifier a few years ago. I gave it away last year. It was the noisiest damn thing I have EVER heard. I had it in my basement and I could hear it upstairs. Replaced it with a "higher end" Fedders and that machine is quiet and has better features.
My "expertise" lies more in electronics. (I collect vintage Tv's,radios, etc...) and most new electronics are crap. Cheap junk that you are lucky if you get a few years out of em. Most name brands are just that.... good brands from the past that now have their nameplate plastered to whatever corporation owns em now. I notice appliances have gone the same route, and should have known that Whirlpool probably isn't the best quality that they were years ago. Even the Fedders I bought has a "made in China" sticker. I wonder who makes that? Knowing my luck, probably the same company that cranked out that POS Whirlpool...

My parents have a DeLonghi dehumidifier, It's piped to the drain so it can run almost costantly in the winter when we need it most in our basement, you hardly notice it while being in the same room, the fan being more silent then the compressor, plus it doesn't consume loads of electricity, only 220W/h per 12 litres/day. It's a few years now but still works fine. The only drawback is the small tank, only 4,5 litres I think.
