Going Green

I have recently decided to try and go fully for the environmentally friendly option...after all, London water is constantly recycled! Seeing the list of toxic-sounding chemicals in your average detergent is a bit off-putting but maybe I'm too easly swayed. I am now using Ecover liquid which is frankly rather pricey and not too hot on grease. I wish they'd make a biological version. The lavender perfume is quite pleasant though and a scoop of oxy bleach makes it go for hot wash whites.

I've also tried the new superconcentrated green power by Footprint - just 35ml for hard water! Smells nice in the tub but very little scent on the washed clothes. Oddly - for a green detergent - its formulation contains phosphates. Performance is so-so and almost sudsless so I tend to pop in a scoop of oxygen bleach for a bit more pep on whites.

Conditioner-wise it's been Ecover for the last three years.

My laundry halcyon days were between 1996 and 1999 - the scent of Ariel futur or concentrated Persil, Daz, Radion, Bold (blue or yellow) and even Surf. I wish they hadn't played around with those fragrances.

Lenor went off fragrance-wise for me when they put that "extra freshness" into it around 1995 and these days I find it very headachy, along with the new Ariel perfumes (except sensitive). I also found previously some Comfort varieties (yellow and blue) had an edge of cat pee about them...though that might be because a cat did once pee on the arm of a jumper hanging out, creating an association!

Why has P&G dropped their excellent dosing by quarter scoops on powders? Such a simple method! I see they've scrapped the half scoop light soil recommendation too...greedy b******s!!

Shop-brand detergent is usually quite accepable and a darn sight cheaper. The only thing putting me off is the artice I read saying cheaper powders are allowed to contain a certain amount of wax filler that can give whites a yellow sheen when ironed, so I stick to premium brands for whites.

Growing up, I always marvelled at friends whose clothes smelled of washing powder - I didn't think it was possible! Mum was very light handed with the soap (dosage on box: 2 cups for hard water - Mum: 2/3rds cup will do). Still, at least our colours didn't have that tell-tale Ariel fade (very bleachy - no wonder she maintained it rotted clothes...also believed Bold clogged up the machine). I did pursuade her to try liquid when it came out - Wisk - which, thinking back, wasn't that great as it must have contained hydrogen peroxide since the colours would emerge with faded patches where it ran into the drum before filling.

I could run and run on this one but had better stop rambling!

That was my cupboard a few months ago I gave all the liquids away to a friend and cleaned my machine out with dishwasher cleaner and im now back to using Powder as it gives far better results! I’d love to use some detergents which have been posted above

Unilever Drivematic for Towels, Sheets, Whites
Unilever Omomatic Colourlock for Colours (Smells horribley like bubblegum and fragrence lingers)
Martha Gardners Woolmix for wool and other delicates

Huggie Fabric Softener in fabulous vintage original scent or jasmine.

Half a capful of calgon added to each load

The occaisional 40mL of Dettol in the rinse when I'm washing infected hankies.

I've given up on Oxygen Bleach, with the right temp and Drivematic, 99% of stains wash out. On the two occaisions I've had stubborn stains, I've borrowed half a cup from my mother.

For grease stains, I do a quick pre-treat with Vanish Greasy stain remover.

Tide simple Pleasures~Vanilla & Lavender liquid but the dryer sheets suck in that scent.

Pictures? Okay!

Here's my Wolverhampton detergent mini-collection. Over the past four months it included:

Persil bio
Ariel non-bio
Ariel Liquitabs (for the prewash)
Ariel Color & Style
Ariel with Febreze Effect
White Distilled Vinegar (to neutralize all the above *lol*)
Calgon (for less detergent in the main wash)
ASDA Disinfectant (for 40°C washes, which really are cold in the Speed Queen)
Dettol Disinfectant (as above)
Lenor with Febreze Effect
(various other Lenor softeners)
Comfort Crème Sweet Almond Oil
Bounce dryer sheets

Additional laundry helpers:
a toothbrush to clean the detergent dispenser of gunk
an empty three-liter bottle of Lenor to top-up the rinse water level

"A detergent I´m very proud of..

My 6 litres Persil Color Gel canister with tap.."

And you should be, because I LOVE that detergent and I'd KILL for that bottle! :)

Incidentally, for our German members (only slightly off-topic):

What is the most popular hand dishwashing liquid in Germany these days?

Almat 2 in 1 Tablets for Both whites and colours at uni :P

i can't be bothered carrying loads of products downstairs, I just drop two of the round tablets into the drawer and press start and walk away lol. they are pretty good and have aloe vera fresh scent to them :)

got daz liquid too which i use occasionally on stuff

Mum uses Persil/Daz/Surf Tropical in Powder/Tablet form

and asda/comfort blue/Lenor Spring/Summer Softener :)

Dishwashing liquid

I guess that'd be Pril by Henkel. Has been around since 1951. Available as Original, Power Gel, Balance, Lime, Sensitive, Lemon and Apple.

produkte_uebersicht.jpg

Tide with Bleach powder for whites
Fresh Start for colored fabrics
Ivory Snow powder for sheets
Oxydol for dog beds and blankets

and of course Final Touch on everything except towels!

I must admit Greg G is right on about Non-Concentrated Downy. The scent is very close to Original Downy of the 1970's. I hope P&G will continue to sell it because new Ultra Downy is horrendous!

Henkel Persil no.1 for me

My choices are,
1.Henkel Persil(but the family deli have not had it in a long time.)
2.Liquid Radiant with colour care(nice smooth liquid and nice fragrance too.)
3.Surf range in powder and liquid forms.
4.Dynamo with eucalyptus(smells like Dettol, love it,was very suspicious of Dynamo for a long time but I thought I would give it a chance,am using at the moment.)
Fabric softener, yyeecchhh no thanks don't like and don't use(with apologies to those who do like them).
Last weel I was given 2 boxes of Fab powder by a friend one with fragipanni fragrance and the other sunshine fresh will advise on how they are going.

For modern detergent I really only use Tide with Bleach powder. I never ever buy any liquid detergent, I can't stand the smell it leaves as they all seem to have the same underlying smell no matter what the scent is and the liquids are damaging to vintage rubber.

I much prefer to use vintage detergents with Phosphates, and with the disappearance of powdered detergents I think its going to be time in the near future to research and figure out how to make our own powder detergent using Phosphates. Now that's a thread in itself.

For softener I only use Scent Free Downy, I cannot take the smell of modern fabric softeners. I also don’t mind the Supermarket brand pink stuff in the large gallon containers, but it does not soften as well as Downy.

Toploader...

you can buy Persil from your local Miele dealer, but be ready it is expensive stuff!!!

I have a small detergent collection here, but for the most part I use original Tide powder and pink grocery store brand softener. My favorite softener is Final Touch, but it is not all that readily available in greater Chicago.
For my whites I use Foca, that stuff gets my whites WHITE too!!!

At the moment I use:
For whites/coloureds: Ecover Color or Neutral Color powder.
For whites I sometimes add Ecover bleach powder.
For delicates (woolens):e Ecover Delicate liquid.
Softener for coloureds/delicates: Neutral.
I use no softener for whites.

For Louis:
I have placed the cardboard scoop that comes in every box of Ecover powder next to the softener. I never use this scoop myself as I find it a bit awkward. I prefer an ordinary spoon.
