Digital to Analog T.V broadcast for the home

Hello all,

As I sit here my favorite Sony TV is on in the back ground of the kitchen playing the local news station. I have come to miss the ability to tune the channels via the actual TV it is a Uhf&#92Vhf set. Instead we have DTV tuner boxes on all our TV's. I can see your thought... so what, at least they work.

I only bring this up because Evan and I were discussing a Lodge-net install that is taking place at the local Y which basically creates a small cable system distribution for the facility using a bunch of tuners each set to a different channel and a rack of modulators that recombine it all and sent it out over the coax line. Would something like this be feasible for the home? We have 9 to 10 analog only TVs that all have the DTV converters.

Is this something that others have looked into ? What is your solution for this... just a DTV Converter ?

I've never considered anything that complex, but it sounds interesting.

 

That SONY looks very much like the 17" high contrast Trinitron I splurged on back in 1977.  For a number of years it was operating +/- 12 hours a day after I offered it up to my parents to use as their only set.  I got it back when they graduated to a set with remote control, and I used it until around 2007 when one of the guns started to fail and everything would turn pink.  Up until that time the picture quality was as good as the day I bought it.

Lodgenet for home... no

I worked for a large television manufacturer that had many TVs in hotels. I was working with Lodgenet for years.
Just for the record, some small-to-medium sized hotels couldn't afford Lodgenet, so home use isn't practical.
It would be sorta fun to have a "barker" channel on your TV that said "Welcome Home Mike, ready for TV?"
That aside, I don't see a home-made application as possible. Let's say you wanted to reproduce Chicago analog channels of 2,5,7,9,and 11. You would need RF converter outputs of 2,5,7,9,11. I've not seen a DTV converter that outputs anything other than 3 and 4.
Lodgenet has a sophisticated selection and channel reassignment system that isn't easily duplicated.

The best you could do is maybe some RF modulators hooked up to different dtv boxes, that would be big bucks though.

You would also have to deal with cross modulation because the rf converters are notoriously noisy.

I have been doing some digging around and come up that I am going to work on this over time and have come up with building a home headend for about 20ish channels with used analog system parts...... each of the modulators in the head end would have a dedicated frequency then through a combiner and out over a second system. Of course each of the 20 channels would have to have a matching input device..... Basically it would be a large Digital to analog converter that would allow for many things including controlling of what is watched as well as expansion to include a in home source such as direct TV, DVD, VHS, etc.... Going to keep this project on the idea pile.... And hoping to have it started soon, I think it would be a fun addition to our goal of doing a retro/ modern remodel to the house.
