Hello,

I've got a newer kenmore machine with an extremely noisy tub brake. It squeals like a pig on spin init, but once it gets going it goes away. I don't know if the clutch is bad or the brake, any ideas? I'd really like to tear the brake out and just use it that way. ANyone had this problem before? Anyone know how to get at that pesky tub brake?

Gracias!
Steven

Re: Direct Drive Kenmore tub brake troubles:

Hi! Steven, I don't know about other peoples opinions, but I would think if I'm reading what you wrote correctly, you are thinking about just taking the Brake Pads off, or to totally remove the Brake Assembly? I would think that you would eventually cause more damage and more costly Repairs later on, even possibly sooner than later.

It might even be just like with the Belt-Drive Kenmore Washers, that the Brake/Clutch Assemblies need some adjustments. If your Washer is relatively new, it must get quite a lot of use, or it just had maybe a bad set of Brake Pads installed originally, or mis-adjusted originally.

I would still see what anyone else writes as comments, suggestions and help as well, but that is my thoughts about your wanting to remove the Brake Pads and/or the whole Assembly totally.

Believe it or not, I've never taken apart a Direct-Drive Kenmore/Whirlpool Washer as of yet, as far as other than to replace the Lid Safety Switch and to just check out below on a 1992 Lady-K Set I had for a while. Now I've got an identical Washer again, but not in operation at this time and I'm hoping to locate the Matched Dryer sometime.

Good Luck with the problem, I hope that you get some other advise to help you with this. What approx age is your Washer, do you have the Matched Dryer too?

Peace and Happy Kenmore Washing, Steve

its just a fixer upper

Its actually only 4 years old, I bought it from the appliance recycler, figured it looked new so i could fix it and sell it. I replaced the broken coupler but when the thing went into spin i about jumped out of my shorts!

Even tho its a newer one its obviously had a hard life, the back has surface rust and it looks like they had used the top as a painting surface, the wife and i scrubbed the daylights out of it with tr-3 to get it all off!!
