Dishwasher - unidentified brand $50

" have an older almond colored dishwasher for sale. I'm not sure of the make, but will update the ad when I find out. I'm renovating an apartment and would like to see it go in the near future.

I also have a matching electric range and range hood for sale for $50

That is a late 1970s early 1980s D&M product with the funky I wanna be a Maytag Reverse Rack with the funk wash system. pop-up tower for upper rack and full size spray arm above the top rack and below the bottom rack. Horrible dish loading arrangement, very wasteful. I cannot figure out the brand even blowing it up to 400%. But over the cycle buttons it has Energy Saver. It COULD be a Magic Chef.

I think those two white things in the lower rack are stowaways. All those buttons and such a POS rack and water distribution situation. You have to wonder who could allow that to even be designed, let alone manufactured for sale. The door panel has held up better than the lower panel.

The stove looks like that cheap Tappan that was in Roseanne's kitchen.

That must have been some apartment.

Bottom Rack.

What are the two things in the bottom rack?  Do they belong to that machine?  My cousin has a Caloric that looks a bit like that.  The buttons and dial look a bit like what he has.  His is probably from that time frame.  I have never opened it to see the rack configuration.  He and his wife haven't used it in years.  His wife washes everything by hand.

Modern Maid?

I liked this wash configuration, but not with triangle-tine hell in the bottom rack. This double-humped saucer-shelf setup screwed you when you actually populated those areas with saucers, or strove to live dangerously and perched bowls on them (which sometimes keeled forward and blocked the tower). The width of the items in the humps prevented you from loading the rack's inboard-most rows of tines.

Maybe a Modern Maid? It's hard to make out the tag. I agree, a neighbor's Caloric here had the same configuration. They offered to let me have it (it was virtually unused, the proverbial chip storage) if I paid for a new machine to replace it, as they were selling the house.

I politely declined.

I always liked that D&M supplied "Power On" lights for these machines of many makes and models at the time. You needed it, what with whisper-quiet dishwashing like that. *rolls eyes*

Being I posted some Modern Maid early 90s stuff in Deluxe forum - I thought I would post some 70s dishwashers in Imperial! We will start with 1976!

Its an O'Keefe & Merritt

I bought a condo that had this DW and the rest of the appliances. Those white basket in the bottom go to something else. The DW worked very well, it had the full size spray arm on the top. It was a pain to load, the bottom rack was a bad design and the top rack was to low.

It also looks like the Gaffers & Statler with those round buttons that I had in one of my first apartments, back in the mid 70's

Those white trays in the bottom don't belong to that machine. They make no sense whatsoever. The utensil racks are suppose to be in the bottom rack either along the right side or left side of it.

The detergent dispenser on the door reminds me of the first DW (KM BOL) I had bought when I moved into an apartment many many moon ago as does the cycle control knob and the door latch lever. The cycle buttons on my DW were square though not round.

It's too bad we don't have a closeup of the upper right side of the door frame the mfg. tag is there but you can't see it. The solution to the mystery make lies there!

I agree on D&M but which... knob, latch, control knob say one thing. Buttons, rack design and layout, lower wash arm w/tower say something else.

The design is the most pathetic design I ever saw yes (want to be maytag) What were they Thinking? I always liked the original design with the full size arm under each rack and No tower! No wonder D&M went under. I never saw this design on a sears or modern maid! Does anyone know the determining factor that made them use this bad design?

I wonder if the brand is First Lady, which was a house brand of Mercantile Stores (which largely got absorbed by Dillard's)...stores like Jones Store (Kansas City), McAlpin's (Cincinnati), Joslin's (Denver). I didn't think they ever did white goods though; plus they really didn't have any locations in the Pennsylvania area that I know of.

Peter, I remember seeing it on ONE model in their line-up. It was like one of those "special" models like for around Christmas catalogue and similar nature. When I'd go to the DFW metroplex t visit friends in the various suburbs, there was a big Sears achros store at Valley View Mall I'd go to in the 1980s to kill time while waiting for friends to get home from work. There was like one model on the sales frloor. It just didn't make sense t me to have that one, but it as there. I'd already seen this arrangement in friends' house in Houston they bought like in 1983 or 1984 that G&S appliances and friends in the Dallas suburb of Garland had a Caloric branded dishwasher with this arrangement and someone from church had a 1983 or 1984 Magic Chef model like Nate played with at one time that had no tower but had the two big wash arms above the top rack and below the bottom rack.

D&M ruined their reputation with this design. I know a lot of club members don't care for them but before this horrible design came out they still sold more of them. People liked loading without the inconvenience of a tower. And until the late 70's they had a better share in the market. I used to frequent this appliance store that sold a lot of caloric and magic chef dw's and once this design came out nobody really wanted them. Modern Maid did stay the same. People that wanted this type of DW now went to sears. Also at that time these machines were sold with Ranges (mostly gas) and you could get a deal on these DW's but once the design changed a lot of the sales reps encouraged people to go with kitchenaid whirlpool and ge as in reality they were still better machines. It is still a mystery why D&M bastardized their business?? But is almost as bad as what wci did to Frigidaire!

I wonder if it may be made by Tappan?? Didn't Tappan make a model with a certain type of wash system? I remember seeing them on "Let's Make a Deal" but my brain just doesn't want to rewind far enough to remind me whether they called it something like " Reversa wash" or whatever . Nice looking racks.

A little older, but it sure reminds me of the Caloric I replaced in my house. The dial, detergent dispenser, rinse aid dispenser, and slots at the bottom of the door are the same. Was Caloric a brand of another company?
