I used to love the scent of Downy before it because the superconcentrated and then the ultraconcentrated. Anyone recall the freshness and lightness of the original scent? I hate the new stuff. Any comments anyone?

70's Downy is my all-time favorite!

I find it now and then at estate sales and save it for those "special" wash-loads... You can see a couple of bottles on the cart. I also like the vintage Final Touch, but not as well as the Downy.

The larger bottle in front is new, non-ultra Downy that is the closest approximation to the old fragrance that I've found and I generally use that for most everyday washing.

Hi Greg~

Love your stash!..I just have ONE request..Please move the Final Touch bottle up to the front!! LOL =)

New and "Improved" Downy

I hate the new scents of Downy. I wish I can say I remember the vintage scent of Original Downy from the 70's. I was a small child back then. Downy- (all flavors) are much too loud and over the top in scent, much like Suavitel is.
The only fabric softener on the market that I like currently is Final Touch. It has a light, fresh scent. Not too overpowering and leaves your clothes lightly scented.

I like the Final Touch as well...

I also like the Downy "Cashmere" too, but it can irritate my skin if I use more than just a leeeetle bit, lol!

Suavitel is hit-or-miss but the new "Aromatherapy" ones are good.

I'm surprised no one has come out with a "Tea Tree" fabric softener! I have an awesome tea tree oil shampoo and I would think that whole brisk, "cool", minty smell would go over big...

New Downy Ugh!

I hate the new super-ultra-concentrated Downy! It's more like a greasy sludge than a laundry product! I don't know whether to pour it or scoop it. I put a glob of the stuff into the fabric softener dispenser cup in my aunt's Maytag Dependable Care (mid 1990s) and then diluted it with hot water. The Downy just stayed in its wretched, foul-smelling glob at the bottom of the cup. I even cleaned her fabric softener dispenser cup and agitator top before I used it, and the whole thing was filled with what I would call, for lack of a better description, "snot." The color, the consistency, the odor, I really don't want snot all over my clothes!

Sorry about being gross, but I really think the new Downy is an example of why product concentration isn't universally good.

I think that even Suavetel is less offensive,
Dave

I have reverted to using Huish softeners. I buy them at Target. Typically I prefer a non-scented softener but lately I have been going for a comforting smell. Huish softening products work well. Publix and Harris-Teeter both have a scent-free formula. Kroger also now has a scent-free softener in its Everyday Living line. I like it too although its just a bit heavy.

You know, I like to think of the people here as a cross section of American tastes. (Yes, I know we have people from other places too) You would think if very few people here like the New Downy, then wouldn't you think that most of America doesn't like it too and wouldn't the folks at Downy get the message?

I don't like the new Ultra Downy concoctions either, much prefer the April Fresh in the standard (watery?) form in the bottle pictured above. I bought some Final Touch last weekend and that seems to work well and leaves a light scent. I can't stand the heavy scents, just a light scent is more than enough for me. I only use about 1/4 of the recommended amount so the bottles last me a long time. I'm not sure why people seem to be so enamored with their washing smelling of a fruit smoothie from McDonalds, but I suspect it masks the ugly truth that their clothes aren't truly clean.

Fabric softener should smell like fabric softener

This is an apt thread. I'm freqently opening fabric softener bottles at stores, trying to determine whether I can stand the scent of a particular softener or not. When I got an old GE softener dispenser on ebay, it came with complimentary bottles of old Downy and Sta-Puf. The Sta-Puf had already been opened so I opened it again to sample it and there it was! The same scent I remembered as a child and I wished they still made it and it still had the same scent. I also want to be able to buy non-concentrated (forget ultra-concentrated)softeners other than the cheap store-brands. The more concentrated the product is the less well it's going to work in the dispensers.

Allen, product decisions are usually made by marketing departments, who are generally comprised of people who have no idea what the product does, or what people think about it (I can say that, as I used to work in marketing ;-)

Compounding the problem is the whole institution of focus groups, where they bring a bunch of the unemployable together to munch on stale sandwiches and warm pop, while they take out their aggression on whatever annoys them about the product. We once had to remove a darling little animated character from our website because this horrible woman took an instant dislike to him. (She's probably the same one that decided the new Downy scents.)

Personally, scents don't bother me. The thing I miss most about the old Downy was the sensuous shape of the bottle. The new one is way too lumpy for my taste. It's almost as if they've changed the shape of the bottle to reflect the changing shape of the average American ;-)
