Driving home from work, i stumbled across this...a SERVIS

Does it work?

In one word ......... NO!

I was told that the programmer was dodgy, but when we powered up it ticked away and nothing happened, apart from the pump working away.

Bit of a ball ache really as we are having to check other things out firts before being able to confirm what it is.

Temporarily ignoring the programmer, we headed for the motor which was Hotpoint. Extracting the bushes revealed very, very worn down carbon with pretty much nothing left.

So, new carbons have been ordered (2 sets in fact) and a set will be istalled asap, to see if that was the cause of the machine being written off.

Will keep you posted on the situation.

For a 21 year old machne (components are dated 1988), we are really pleased with its overall condition. i wish i had taken a picture of the bottom of the machine, when it was in my car. Honest to god, it was absolutely immaculate. No dust or rust at all.

There is one small area of rust starting on the side edge of the lower panel below the door, but thats all.

I am very pleased that i stopped and picked it up. Whether it works or not, I am very happy with it.

Congrats on the new machine for your collection guys.
Really lovely to see it's been looked after and cared for as you don't see that very often.

It's nearly identical to one I had when I first moved to Scotland. It was called a Servis Spectrum and it looked like it was the TOL model as it was all electronic rather than having a dial / mecahnical timer. I had to wheel it to the sink and connect it up eveytime I wanted to use it as there was only one space for an appliance and it was filed with a dishwasher.

Hi Guys.

many thanks for the best wishes and kind words about the repair and getting it going again.

I am really glad i stopped by and acquired her - whilst cleaning it up, it made me realise that i made the right decision.

Am going to let onto the guy about what we do, on Friday, and will ask him to keep his eyes peeled for any scrap classics that come his way. See what, if anything, it throws up.

Philip....will deffo do some vids, once we get the machine operational again - assuming that we do. Luckily, i know the location of an identical machine in a spares shop, although whether the owner would cannibalise it for spares is another matter entirely. hopefully it wouldnt come to that.

How do Gary - indeed it has been a bit quiet lately - thank god! I didnt know whether i would be able to keep going the week after your keymatic turned up, quickly followed by mine and rob's Hotpoint/Zanussi Liberator, plus everything else that caused great stress that week!
I am just grateful that things have been relatively calm for a while.
How is the 3243H doing and have you been to Mathew's yet?

The calm is before the storm though, as this saturday i am subjecting myself to a mammoth trek to deepest Essex to collect a new bit of kit - something a bit different!

I am really glad you posted that piccy of your old Spectrum, but i have a question for you.

What was with the Spectrum name when, to all intents and purposes, it appears to have been standard Servis Quartz?

I have another picture of one of your machines (cant remember which) and noticed the Spectrum sat next to it. I have always wondered what it was about, but never got round to asking - until now.

Were the Spectrums exclusives to particular stores - in a similar way to electra and aristocrat?

How many models were so branded?

You have got me intrigued.

Hi Paul

Im doing ok thanks. Washers are doing well.(I must update my list on my profile)(Will do that after I post). I only have 1 new machine (Unless I didn't mention the WM41? Can't remember) which is a Early Hoover New Wave from 1993. It was getting scrapped so I aquired it to see what I could do with it as I didn't really know what was wrong with it.
Well it needed a new pump as this had been leaking for a very long time. The bottom of the machine is very rusty but still strong so hopefully the suspension won't get pulled out when it spinning (That would be fun...not). There was a also a drum fatigue crack in the outer drum (At the top) so each time it went onto spin wash full of water it would push water out of the drum and onto the pump terminals. I only found this out after the house electrics would trip each time it went onto spin wash. Took me ages to figure out where the water was coming from as you couldn't really see the crack.
Anyway after a good clean and bleach (The doorseal was discusting) and the pump replaced and crack sealed, its working ok so far. It makes a bloody racket when spinning but it hasn't shaken itself to bits yet. The "wave lens" on the soap drawer is missing but overall its in good cosmetic condition. Suffers with the usual yellowing from age. Oh and I found the usual change in the sump..£ 1.42.

Sorry been rambling!!! To get back to the Servis. The picture file I have for it is listed "Servis Spectrum 6035" so I can only guess its model 6035. I have other pics of it but I didn't take a pic of the door label with the model number.
Im afraid that is all I can tell you about it Paul. I remember getting it because I love machines with led displays and lots of buttons / knobs and Lights..lol.
I didn't have it long as I thought the wash times were very very quick and I like a decent wash length. The 40 wash was like 15 - 20 mins if I remember. I sold it on eBay to a local couple who were in desperate need of a washer. I was pleased it was going to a good home.

Congrats on saving the New Wave - getting rare and rarer by the day. Any piccies about and that perennial Matchboxpaul question - whats the model number?

I am after one as well - a 1500rpm one would do nicely!

I remember seeing a piccy of the WM41 - a smart looking machine. Remember the Microprofile's coming out as a kid and being in awe of that facia! such a stylish advanced looking appearance to my eyes - was mighty impressed.
Will have to get a motor in mine and robs one day - see if all that talk of the 1400rpm being really too much for the standard hotpoint cabinet (rather a lot of rattling ensues apparrently).

Cheers for the info on the Spectrum. Must say that it sounds like it has the potential to be another mystery machine, as 6035 is the standard Quartz. So whether Servis maintained the standard model number for this seemingly special edition - anyones guess.

Ironically the storage place where me and rob keep all our bits and pieces harbours/harboured a servis Quartz! we had been faffing about there one day and were just finishing and preparing to go home. I was top floor putting trolley back in lift and rob had gone down stairs to sign out.
He comes bounding back up the staire to excitedly whisper 'theres a quartz downstairs!'.

i followed and sure enough, being wheeled into the lift was a full door quartz in good condition, wrapped all over in clingfilm.
obviously done to protect the machine whilst in storage, methinks it would make the machine 'sweat' a bit in the heat!

we went and sat in the car and spent 5minutes deciding what to do. eventually we went back in and enquired about the machine - only temporary storage, whilst houses were changed.

timing was perfect - if we'd left 5mins earlier we'd have misssed it.

thanks for the info Mark - have amended spreadsheet with a set of brackets - SERVIS Mk(6035) Spectrum.

Hi Paul

I like you love the fascia of the Microprofiles. As ive mentioned I love lights and buttons etc so the Microprofiles are fab especially when the lights are off and it's all lit up..lol

Mine has been ajusted so it saves the bearings as your right in that 1400 in these machines did them no favours.so the top spin speed is approx 1200 rather than 1400. The 1000 spin setting is approx 800. I rarely use the 1200 and most always have the final spin set at 1000 so it spins at approx 800. I find the clothes come out fine. The 1200 does not last very long but I still would prfer to look after the bearings as the machine is plumbed in and does get used.

The new wave is in the kitchen (And I managed to sneak the Zanussi dryer in also so it saves me constantly going to the garage..Although now it's summer its not being used as much).

Its A NEW WAVE AUTO-WASHER ELECTRONIC 1200 - MODEL AC174 - MARCH 1993.

I owned a New wave plus 5 back in 1997 which I purchased new but I gave that to a good friend in need many years ago. I never expected to own another one so it's good to own one again. It gets used everyday practically. It rattles like hell but it's still going. Im not to fussed if it dies as it's not really one I would class as good enough to have in a collection. Lots of internal rust where the pump was leaking and the of course the crack in the drum and im hoping no more appear. It still has a habit of tripping the electrics (Which its just been doing and ive had to reboot the pc 3 times...very annoying). Its not leaking anywhere so I have no idea why its doing it.The door seal needs replacing as it has a slight leak but im not going to replace it. The one thing that is annoying is that you cannot change the spin speed. Its either 800 then 1200 on cottons or 500 on synthetics.That's it. No options to change the spin. There is evidence of a previous bearing failure (Usual rust marks running down the back of the drum from the "bearing hole"). Good thing I guess in that I know the bearings have been replaced. They are great at the mo with no play in the drum or any evidence of them starting to go again.Im pleased the machine is only a 1200 machine. I think it's a good speed. Although speeds above 1200 are entertaining I don't think they are good for a machine. I wonder how long the bearings lasted on a 1500rpm machine?

I know this was a few years back now and a bit of stupidity, but just out of interest, do you know you have to push and twist the dial to select a cycle? Just a thought, I tried turning it and realized you had to push and turn lol. If it's at the end of program D (Spin 1000) it'll just pump, same goes for G.

Hopefully you'll get yours running, and if I ever do see you, I'll bring mine!
