Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Wow!

Dryer is newer than the washer.
I noticed the washer is a 'NORMAL' branded cycle and not 'COTTON/STURDY'

Quiet pak...

Unfortunately the washer does not have the quiet pak belt.

The last primary model issued to use that belt for Kenmore was a 1979 Kenmore 80-series 24-inch model. It wasn't a widely made model, though production numbers are relative for KM vs others. The last mainstream quiet pak KM was the 1975 Kenmore 70 large capacity machine.

The washer may be the same age as the dryer, in fact they could have been purchased together. In August 1981, when the "Energy Saver" belt-drives were introduced on a new line of 1981 models, the consoles were all slightly redesigned at the same time, and the Normal cycle was renamed "Cotton Sturdy".

As another Kenmore mystery, this model, which is 1980 Kemore model 20741, remained in production using the new and slightly smaller tubs which offered savings in water consumption. I have seen this series machine with production dates into 1983. I do not believe an exactly matching dryer remained in production with it. I have no idea why Kenmore retained this 1980 model in production for nearly two years after all others were replaced by 1981 models.

The dryer is a 1981 KM 70. It was an odd model to have only one temperature, but a full width door. I recall a similar set on display at Sears in 1982. This dryer looks very lightly used, as the finish on the drum looks unworn.

An easy way to recognize late production1980 black panel models is the hockey stick level and temp knobs. These were modified for use with the 1981 models, but were used on this model and other 1980 models for a few weeks in summer 1981.
