I am currently trying to fix a Dyson model 079 cyclonic vac for a friend. The 4-position switch on the handle that turns it on and controls the power head is cactus (off, vac only, vac+power head, "zorb" -wtf-power head with no vac??) The switch is mounted on a small circuit board, one of two inside the handle. The switch is open inside so you can see into the switch once the handle is dis-assembled, the contacts inside are burnt/eroded, making it erratic.
The switch isn't available here as a spare part, nor are the circuit boards. All Dyson Aust will supply is a complete assembly of handle and hose, at over $150. That is too much for the owner of the vac.
Does anyone in UK know if the switch or boards are available in the UK? (USA boards will be the wrong voltage). Or does anyone have a good set of boards from a dud machine??
The machine is clear and purple, believed to be about 4 years old.
The owner is not impressed, there is always something breaking on it - third power head, second wand, the handle on the vac recently snapped off.

I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks,
Chris.

Dyson DC05 Motorhead.

Hi, That model is the DC05 Motorhead in the UK.
The only thing I could suggest is contacting Dyson UK and perhaps they could supply and ship just the switch.

Hi Chris -

Unfortunately, these individual components are not available in the UK either, and never have been. Dyson themselves do not consider the DC05 Motorhead's hose, wand and powerhead assemblies to be worth opening up and repairing, and therefore see no need to carry the relevant parts. All they will do is offer to mail out complete replacements for the consumer to fit at home, and if you're out of the guarantee period, that doesn't come cheap.

I'm no longer in the trade myself, but if there are any other UK members who know the whereabouts of a discarded machine to use for parts, that would be the only way to go IMHO. Where this specific model is concerned, purchasing a new hose would simply be throwing good money after bad; given its track record, something else will fail later anyway.

One other possibility I would like to suggest - is there any way to bypass the handle controls with a little creative wiring? By leaving the switch inactive, so the vacuum runs when plugged in, it will at least be usable. Of course, this all depends on whether or not the user will be happy with this type of fix, and if they are willing to sacrifice some of the functionality they have paid for.

Good luck,

Kirk

fixed it - for now.

I fixed it today by taking the switch apart, carefully cleaning up the eroded contacts and then soldering each of the contacts to build them up again. Worked a treat. Cost nothing. The kind of repairs I like.

Gee, the thing really is a flimsy POS, though.

I loaned the owner an old Miele of mine - she likes it so much she asked if she could buy it from me! (no)

Chris.
