Happy to have posted the pic for you.

The Bendix machines after the square door ones were pants like you say. I adored my mums Bendix autowasher de luxe with the big square door and was so lucky a couple of months ago to get the instruction book for it off eBay.....Happy memories!.

With regards to the powder for the new Whilpool I will probably use Big box Ariel or Bold.Im not to keen on the twin tub powders these days as they foam up like mad!We are currently using Morrisons Cyclone for the twin tub and that foams really badly. Persil is the worst!!......Constant suds lock!!!

I was thinking of Bold because I always like to use the extra rinse option in the top loader and of course the fabric conditioner is dispensed after the first spin ready for the rinse so there wouldnt be much point in it as it would rinse once more and wash the conditioner out.I could though wait for the second rinse and then pour in conditioner.I thought if I used bold I would be able to have the second rinse and not worry about putting conditioner in.The problem is that I like conditioner to much so Im not sure what ill do!!

Ahh....detergent....one of my favourite topics!!

Bold is a good product in so much as it cleans reasonably, softens laundry to a very moderate extent, and leaves laundry with a strong scent which lasts.

It is not so good for tough cleaning as any detergent with fabric conditioner in will not clean as well as one with out - it's a chemical thing. It doesn't offer any antistatic benefit. It doesn't help wrinkles to fall out of clothes. Personally, I would select Ariel as a big box detergent over Bold any day.

Ariel colour powder may be a good choice if you are considering using LCB in your new washer, LCB shouldn't be used with oxygen bleach or brighteners. You could add LCB to Ariel Colour no problem. You could also add oxi-action or something to give grubby light colours a boost when needed. The new Ariel scent is also very strong and long lasting, it's a bit like the Green Bold scent anyway.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about the softener going in the first rinse. I think you would be pleased with the results. Rinsing softener out is recommended for people with sensitive skin anyway. The clothes would still be softer than with Bold, and certainly would offer more antistatic benefits. They wouldn't be quite so limp / lank either.

I once had an Ariston which took the softener down half way through the rinses (because it was cr**) and I actually quite liked the result.

On another note, Jon and I have found that in terms of powder, Persil is a better rinser than Ariel. This seems to vary with water conditions though. Twin Tub powder - I have heard reccomendations for Tesco own, and have even sent a box of it over to Bryan (Westexman) though I don't think we've had a discussion about it yet. I've never used it.

You could of course use Bounce for loads which will be tumble dried though apparently this isn't good for the dryer.....

What a dilemma ! But it'll be fun working on a solution.

Its funny you mention the cleaning power of Bold as ive always thought its not as good as Ariel/Persil (OOPS Can I put those two side by side?). I love the smell of Bold though and its the only powder that Ive noticed really keeps its smell.My favourite is the blue one but then again ive never actually washed with the green or the purple but just sniffed the boxes in the supermarket. Its a strange site me going around the detergent idea sniffing all the boxes.

Im afraid im going to be really thick and ask what LCB means as i have no idea.

Ive never really used laundry additives.I used to use ACE bleach in my Admiral top loader but never really new if it did anything.I did buy a few months back a cheap version of the vanish oxi action powder. Never really new if that did much either.

Im a person who loves my clothes to smell a lot of conditioner or powder (My partner moans sometimes he goes to school smelling like the detergent isle).To me if it smells strong it means its really fresh and clean.I guess thats in my head but if my clothes etc smell nice then it makes me feel better. Im yet to find a powder/conditioner which really keeps its smell after line drying but Bold is pretty good though.

Im heading towards Ariel colour for my darks as I have a thing about Ariel. Persil never seems to enter my head for some reason although its a great product.

Of course you can add me to msn - anyone here can - [email protected] BUT I'm hardly ever on it. I have to share this computer with my wife, and we only get to use it a little at midday when not working, and then an hour or so in the evening before bed - the reason, a toddler named Luke.

So when I go on the computer it's with a list of jobs to do as opposed to time to chat. But if I see you online it would be good to talk.

Yes - I think it's ok to put Ariel and Persil side by side.

LCB is liquid chlorine bleach and it's what many (most?) Americans use in TL machines in white washes for stain removal. Short wash times and the style of agitation render LCB necessary with heavily soiled whites. But if you use it with a powder containing oxybleach (all `green' and `blue' powder or tabs in the UK) the one bleach cancels the other out. If you use it with optic brighteners you get yellowing. So you have to use it with a `purple' colour detergent. When Luke was a baby the bibs were my biggest laundry challenge ever. No powder, no temperature, would remove those staisn and all our friends baby bibs were gross even when `washed'. Mine of course were spotless and glowing white and have been kept in the loft for any future babys. Solution? Persil colour powder, 60 degree wash, add LCB through the drawer washed down with plenty of water about 20 mins after the machine starts. Same principle as in the US - the clothes should agitate with the water and detergent a few mins before you add the bleach. This gives time for the enzymes to loosen stains first as LCB also kills enzymes.

When buying LCB in the UK, you need `thin' bleach not thick stuff surfactants as it foams too much. Thin bleach doesn't foam at all. I use Tesco value, there isn't really much thin bleach around these days. Don't use Domestos / Parazone, `toilet' type bleach. You need to be really careful with the dosage - between abot 50ml and 100ml of the value stuff is what I reckoned was a good dose. Too much can just trash clothes - it busts the fibres.

Oxygen bleach could be added to light coloured washes in the form of the pink tub of Vanish powder which is just oxi bleach, or in the white tub of `crystal whites' which also has mega quantities of brightener.

But this is just one way of doing it, you could of course just use a green powder like Ariel for everything (contains oxi bleach and brightener) and you may well be perfectly happy with the wash. I don't know if your maachine has a soak action, but you can always manually shut the machine off for half an hour / a couple of hours, whetever, and let the stuff have a good soaking which would help if you didn't use LCB. No internal heater though means the clothes are then washed in cooled down water so take that into account when deciding a wash temperature.

Fabric softener - Lenor lasts on the clothes way longer than the Comfort scent, and the longest lasting one IME is the green one with Febreze. If you're not allergic this is a possibility, especially if it's going in the first rinse, because also the second rinse would wash out some of the Lenor greasiness. I think the fragrance and the softness would remain well though.

Oh blimey how confusing it all is!!!

I think I will stick to my favourite......Ariel bio powder/tabs and have Ariel Colour for my coloureds. With Comfort mainly and the occasional lenor thrown in! Plus I might stretch to buy some oxi powder to use once in a while...I dunno then again I like a change now and again so who knows!!! There are so many different choices now..what is a girl to do?????
