Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Oh I do agree.  Let's go shopping.  Hamilton dryer, the Laundromats, the whirlpool washer.  Those are nice looking fridges, but I'm at a loss for the brand.  Anyone wanna help me out there?

J.L. Hudson's Detroit Michigan

While we're shopping for new Westinghouses and RCA Whirlpools, does anyone know how to find an entire collection of photos of J.L. Hudson's that were online for I don't know how long? Detroit historical sites online don't yeild them anymore. Does anyone here remember them, or have a clue as to how to find them again? I refuse to believe they took them down.

Eiben and Irr looks like a wonderful place to shop, I love all the old department store photos showing the interiors. I'd love to see inside more of these regional businesses.

I think..

The fridges I think are Westinghouse...(what else would anyone in Pittsburgh buy?)
They look like those in the 1958 Annual Report, which has great glamour shots of the 'Shape of Tommorow'

Console TV on the left

Is an RCA Victor with the channel displayed in the little window at the top. Our landlady had this model, circa 1956-1957. The hi-fi on tall legs to the left of the records is an RCA Victor also, a friend of mine has this model still in use, same time frame. The legs come off if you want to use it on a table, credenza, shelf or similar. The refrigerators I think are RCA Whirlpool, the logo on the doors looks the same as what's on the drapes.

BTW, I'd kill for those drapes!

Brought back memories. My parents purchased the exact RCA console 21" screen television on the left in the picture that was an upgrade from the Admiral that my dad bought in the early 50's. My parents purchased their first home in San Francisco in 1955 and was furnishing their new home with new things.

Interesting to see those smaller TVs on the shelves in photo 5... for you young-uns, this is what passed for a "portable" television back in the day. Those things probably weighed at least 20 lbs.

fridges

The fridges in that picture are RCA Whirlpools. If anyone has seen re-runs of Sanford and Son on television, they have a fridge in their kitchen identical to the single door model in the foreground. Only difference was their's was Avacado.

Can anyone provide details on the dark trim pieces on the Whirlpool fridges?   The single door's trim has six characters and the two door models have seven characters.

TOL RCA Whirlpool washer next to range in middle of the floor.
This machine had the TimeLine Control turning thing for the cycles and I believe this machine had a light in that front chrome strip that indicated machine was in operation?

Ok here is what I believe the characters on the RCA Whirlpoo

The single door with 6 letters spells CUSTOM...the one next to it with 7 letters spells SUPREME...and the last one which actually has 8 letters spells IMPERIAL...this is just a very educated guess on my part but if I am not mistaken all three of those names were used on RCA Whirlpool appliances at the time....PAT COFFEY

I also believe this picutre is from 1956 to no later than mi

The reason I think that is because the Hoover Upright on display is a Model 64 Citation which was replaced by the model 65 Convertible in approximately Mid Spring 1957...PAT COFFEY

Thanks for the tour

The box next to the Hamilton dryer is a Westinghouse. The rest are WP, as was stated and they are standing in front of yard upon yard of Whirlpool drapery fabric. Photo #7 is the small electrics/housewares bonanza with all of the usual icons of Sunbeam, Presto and Westinghouse appliances along with the boxed set of Revere Ware so popular as bridal shower, housewarming and wedding gifts.

This was really a neat store, in business from 53-79. They probably got out when the downtown business district died due to malls and big discounters had already been nibbling them to death for a decade. That would be a Twilight Zone store experience. You get to go back and look at stuff, but you can't buy anything because your money is too new. Then they want to see your ID and it's all from 50 years in the future. Just as the policeman is about to haul you away, your spell or visit is terminated and he is left holding empty air where your arm once was.

Or the reverse scenario where you spend a wonderful day in the store looking at everything and talking to everyone and decide to return the next day and find a shell that's been vacant for decades. You don't dare make the mistake of asking anyone about the wonderful store that was there "yesterday."

Great Look Back!

Know some "Old Timers" from Pittsburgh in our street, am going to send them the link!

Love the "Brass Rail Restaurant", someone needs to bring that sort of diner, bar, juke-joint decor themed spot again. *LOL*

*Eastman Kodak Stores*

Gosh almost forgot they even existed.

*Palmer's Restaurant and Lounge*

Not that looks like *my* kind of place! *LOL* Very upscale, but not too frou-frou. Sort of like the spot Gloria Wanderss is taken a few times in "Butterfield 8", the final visit results in her being told off by her lover, and another patron telling him to shove a sock in his verbal abuse because "I've got my WIFE here".

*Down-Town*

Such glorious shots of down-town Pittsburg, both day and night. Anyone remember when going "DT" really meant something? Be it shopping, to have lunch, dinner and or see a show or film, if someone said you were going, it was bound to be fun. People got dressed to go down-town then to. No flip flops or shorts!

*OMG* "Clark Candies"!

Remember "Clark Bars"! Are they still around? Had no idea they stared in Philly.

Give Me A "C", Give Me A "L" Give Me "ARK", what does it spell?

I only wish that another fun candy,"Bonomo" was still around!

"you smack it, you crack it" Turkish taffy

B . O . N . O . M .O . , Bonomo. Oh! Oh! Oh!, It's Bonomo,candy!

Cherry and banana were my favorite flavors.

I haven't heard that tune in 30+ years!!

If you go to some really small towns in Texas, like Kerrville, you'll still see small appliance stores like these.

Several years ago a friend of ours needed a new dryer. So she went to her small town appliance dealer to buy one. They had 3 different dryers in stock. That's all.
Choose one. What happens if the one you want isn't in stock? You special order it and wait several weeks for it to arrive.

Like the local Chevy dealer isn't a Chevy dealer at all, they carry all GM lines and usually there is room for one car only in the showroom.
