The $500 electric bill sucked a lot
That makes me feel not so alone but....OUCH!!!!

well, whats worse than a $500 electric bill? a furnace needing sequencers for the electric back-up heat to the heat pump. this problem arose today. the smell of a burnt sequencer (whatever that is) was preferable to the repairmans fragrance when he showed up. and talk about a waste of electricity. he turned the heat up so high while he was working on it (and it was 65 degrees today)i was worked, lemme tell ya....

Sequencer:device to switch heat coils one at a time in an electric furnace.Had one-and had to replace its sequencer.There was a contact in it that prevented the AC compresser from operating.As you would expect it happened on a 98 degree day.
Regarding electric-resistance heating coils....
A sequencer IIRC is a device to turn on sets of heating coils in a time-staggered, sequenced fashion. Soemtimes there is more than one circuit to feed these, also.
All turning on at once would trip the circuit-breakers or at very least very noticibly dim the lights in the house.
