Make sure you get 3 or 4 belts, and a pump rebuild kit or two while they are still available. This is a great dishwasher and should last you a lifetime. When it is ready for repair, in about 8 or 10 years, you'll have the parts you need! Mark

Hey, I've got this portable's twin! If the belt is sqeaky, replace it and be generous with the included lube. It will be very quiet.

Good catch, Chris! You will like this dishwasher - it's loud, yes, but it does a great job washing. I still have the WU-601 in my kitchen and love it!

I found a new Maytag convertible dishwasher (the exact same model as yours, maybe a the previous year's model) sitting on the side of the road next to a day-care center. When I knocked on their door, the center's owner explained to me that they had been given this machine 10 years ago, but they had never had any use for it and did I need any help loading it into my car!
Took it home, built it in, and am using it happily now. Only complaint is that I don't think it can heat the water to proper temperature for final rinse. Am still looking for a big brother or sister that has fancier controls for perfection.

Does anyone know why Maytag abandoned their revolutionary and brilliant design idea of inverting their racks and having the plates be washed on top? Always thought this was a great idea and frankly, nothing cleans like an old Maytag

Top Loader

I had one about 20 years ago in a top loading model. It was interesting to say the least with the dishes on top. And, as I recall, when you opened the top half the rack came up with it kind of like some of the other top loaders used to do.

At the time I lived on a farm (if you saw the farmer you'd understand, but I digress) with very hard water so about every six months or so I had to clean a filter where the water enetered into the dishwasher. It would get to the point where I could tell by the sound of the machine that it wasn't getting enough water. It was a very good machine. The former owners gave it away because they thought it was just worn out.

Chris, My next door neighbor has the exact same model. It is around 15 years old and still working.

Abandoned Design

I was told by a salesman (just after Maytag switched to the standard loading format) that Maytag switched the design because they weren't selling enough. Mr. and Mrs. Homemaker thought it was weird and didn't like that design.

I thought it was the best ever. I have some friends who have one of these since 1988 and it has never been repaired and cleans great.

Like I said earlier, I wish I still had mine!
