Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yay! Atomic Ranch!!

I subscribe to that magazine!
It can be somewhat hard to find in the bookstores, it comes out 4 times a year... so usually when they're gone at Barnes and Noble, they're gone until the next issue.

It's a drrrrrrreamy magazine!

Do they have Kitchen designs/plans?

I just bought a house and have horrified my friends and remaining family members by announcing that I will be ripping out the kitchen and all the modern built-in appliances to build a retro-themed one - does the Atomic Ranch have articles or suggestions on how to re-create the 50's kitchen look? Right now I am going on photos from old DIY and decorating books, so any help on where to get current supplies will be a boon!

Old DYI mags are good. Here is a site that has some pictures - scroll way down to the bottom - there will be a link to 1950's kitchens (and 1920s - 1940s also) about a screen page up from the bottom. Click on the number in the left column - it is the link. Navigating is not user friendly on this site. Look at the upper left and click on the small easily overlooked print that says "Sparkling Kitchens" and it will take you to a page with several styles listed in the left column, click to view. This is the early 1950s look, not the late 50s which would look more like the Atomic Ranch styles:

I did my kitchen in early 1950's style, check out my web page:

I love what you did with your kitchen! It's gorgeous and very fitting to the house style.

Awesome Kitchen, David!

Thanks for the photos, your kitchen looks great! I am getting all kinds of ideas here. I am aiming for the more atomic look and in turquoise (what a surprise). I will try and get some photos of my current kitchen this weekend.
Thanks for the antiquehomes.org link also!

If you want to spend a little $$$, there is a guy down here near me that has a new, never installed 1950's GE kitchen: a modular unit with a dish washer, washer/dryer combo, stove with oven, and sink. He also has the fridge that looks like a cabinet and hangs on the wall above the counter. He was asking about $3200.00 for the whole set, but it is negotiable. Shipping would be killer. Here's a pic:

Here is the text of the seller's ad:

1956 GE all in one kitchen new never used

"Purchased "NEW" in the 50's & never even connected. Only stored inside for the last 50+years & in next to perfect condition. Washer/Dryer, Stove-Oven, Top Loading Dishwasher and a Sink, all connected with a single piece stainless steel countertop. Included are 2 Metal wall mounted Shelves with built in GE Radio. I also have the matching Wall Mounted 3-Door Fridge available separately. More pictures available or request detailed shots. Serious inquiries only! $2500.00"

He told me the fridge was $1200.00, and prices are negotiable.

I posted this a few weeks ago and some members here have seen it - pretty expensive though. I would love to have this but can't spend that much on it right now (plus I don't have a spare kitchen to put it in - it would go in the garage as a second kitchen).

I have lots more pictures, I can e-mail them to you if you want.

OMG - that is my dream kitchen

WOW that is incredible! But how can someone possibly have bought something like this then never installed it? I think someone out there knows where there's a rip in the fabric of time and they head back into the 50's to go a shopping spree every now and then! lol
Seriously that kitchen would be exactly what I want, the only thing is that the shipping to me in Canada would be easily as much as the entire kitchen... Still the Canadian dollar just got a lot stronger and my partner foolishly gave me 'carte blanche' to re-do the new kitchen... I think I should at least try and find out what the shipping would cost, right?
If the seller would not mind an inquiry just to get an idea about the shipping, can you send me their contact info?
I am dreaming of this kitchen already!! Thanks for the info!!

Thank you!! I got the pictures no problem (the network manager here at work is probably freaking out but, well, tough...). They are amazing and I am going to try and get an estimate for shipping the whole set to Montreal. Maybe we should start a thread on how much that will cost!! lol

These items just got listed on eBay

David, I contacted the seller and as fate would have it, he just listed them on eBay today! I am still going to try and find out what the shipping to Canada will be, though... Perhaps this was not meant for me..
Actually, my partner raised a good point - how will 50 years of storage have affected these appliances? I have heard horror stories of vintage refrigerators where the cooling coils have deteriorated and all the environmentally-unfriendly freon leaking out. Would the gaskets on the washer/dryer and dishwasher still be flexible enough to provide a decent seal? My experience with vintage appliances has always been with items that were used regularly with short storage periods...

Hey Turquoisedude,
I have an older house and since most of my stuff is from the 50's, I did the SAME thing in my kitchen. Got rid of ALL the new appliances the house came with and now I have all 1956 appliances in there. A few people were "confused" but most people think it's cool and believe me.. the look is MUCH better and my 56's will probably outlast the new appliances that were in here.

Well Dude, you could always fly to Houston and rent a UHaul.. One way with a 10ft truck about $1300, not including gas and motels. OH and that 1800 mi drive LOL But then I did it twice last summer

He has listed this on ebay before, there was interest but no buyers - shipping too high. The u-haul might be the cheapest way (or a good friend with a pickup and trailer).

I would check all of the seals and hoses before hooking anything up. If the seals and gaskets are plyable, the set should be fine, assuming nothing chewed on the wires during storage. Several people here have restored appliances from this time period and can let you know what they used as replacements for the rubber parts. You won't have any wear or rust issues to deal with, so you would still be ahead of the game if you can get a good price.

Pete, seriously, was it a tough drive?? I have thought about this as an option. And I have to know, did you have any problems getting vintage stuff over the border?? I was really surprised on Thanksgiving Day when I picked up a GE Mobile-Maid Dishwasher that I got through without a full body search (car body that is...).
