Extended Warranties.....again!

OOPS!..I did it again!........

2009....bought a new AirConditioner for my Mom.....GE 10,000BTU digital with remote.....purchased the extended warranty for 2 years 55.00.....near the end of Summer 2010 it would not cool.......

finally called out service to get ready for this summer......the coil on the back split and lost all freon.......

GE warranty decided it cost too much to fix and sent me a check....not for the sale price I paid, but actual full retail replacement......

they also offered for service to bring the new machine to my house, install it, remove and discard of the old one, if I choose, or was not able to move a heavy machine.....

This is the second time I have dealt with GE, their moto seems to be replace rather than repair.....somewhat part of our disposable machines.....

But I have to admit it pays to have the extended warranty....especially for terms like this, not all do it this way....

I have a 10 year warranty on my Frigidaire FL set....what happens when the bearrings go on this......full replacement refund?....again

but almost like they know, it ain't worth fixing, and it ain't gonna last for too long!

I always thought that extended warranties were just profit centers for the manufacturers. But as appliances and other home products are being made more and more cheaply, it may be time to consider extended warranties. Your story certainly made the point for it.

This is definitely a case of "worth the extra money".  I'm glad that they resolved the problem in your favor by refunding the full amount, not just the sale price.  What Allen said x2.

I too had always heard extended warranties were money makers for manufacturers. But, since having the ice maker on our 2006 Whirlpool Gold side x side serviced four times since 2006 I'm glad we took out the extended warranty. My wife just paid for an additional three years of service warranty.

Now with cashed check in hand.....what to do.....obviously I will get another one, but the same model and type.....or look around for another manufacturer......

their not made like they used to of course.......

but I'm thinking along the lines of Fedders.....

Mom just prefers that it has an "auto" feature, and be remote controlled!

but I have time to shop and compare, once the season hits, they are gone like wildfire.....

and I definately want the extended again.....

I have to consider a new fridge for her eventually, its a Kenmore, with every feature......had it since 1988....but I just know I am not gonna get that much life out of one of the new ones out there!!!

Fedders was always my go to brand for window AC. Around here they make Maytag and a ton of other brands. Good machines from 6500-12500BTU.

These days extended warranties aren't exactly profit centers per se according to what I read probably in CR.. To keep retail costs down most if not all manufacturers have cut their warranties on major appliances down from 5 years to 3 years to 2 years and in some cases 1 year being the new norm so really you're just paying what would have been the adjusted price had the appliance come with an original 5 year warranty. We just bought a new upright freezer and are getting the extended warrant.. I have no faith in new fridges and freezers anymore. Seems like everyone I talk to has problems including us with our fairly new fridge

After Katrina (Aug 2005) many of us lost our main outside condenser units on our 2 to 5 ton AC Units and bought window ac units to get by. Folks needed to dry out their flooded houses; thus a dumb window unit was used.

Folks bought what was available, makers do not instantly make AC units. Thus many folks bought GE,Maytag,LG, Sears, Whirlpool units of 5000 to 10000 BTUH.

If I take the dozen or so units for the 3 to 4 houses around me; 1/2 died in about 2 years and about all are dead today.

I threw out a Maytag; GE and Fedders AC'S since Katrina' all bought in the fall of 2005. An old Sears/Whirlpool 5200 BTUH unit installed in 1997 lasted until 2007; its fins were about all corroded and fin motor's bearing/bushing would seize every 3 weeks and required constant oiling. Its LG compressor still worked when scrapped. In its place is an Zenith unit made by LG ; it has more hours on it today than the failed Maytag, Ge ,Fedders etc

It's hard to put faith in a window a/c that comes all the way from China sells for $89 to $100 and weighs about 20 lbs including the box it comes in. Costs were cut somewhere

A lady next door moved away about 1 month ago and I have 3 more free unknown post Katrina 5 to 7K BTUH ac units to check; to use or chuck.

All that failed early of other units were due to low gas.

ie one has a fatigue failure and the gas seeps put after a few years and the unit runs all the time and only put out 1/3 the BTU's.

All that journey from China must have a few bumps
