"Unilever is against animal testing and funds research into alternatives." Nicely worded. Just a shame it doesn't mean they don't actually test (or have never tested) on animals.

Companies that claim to be against it may not do it on their own premises, but it doesn't mean they don't pay some company to do it on their behalf. Similarly, they may not test a finished product on animals, but you can bet the individual ingredients have been poured down some animals neck for your benefit. A lot of companies use this method to make it sound like they don't test on animals at all, or to back up claims that they are "against it". If you're going to boycott P&G over it, then you should do the same for Unilever, L'Oreal, Garnier, Reckitt Benckiser, SC Johnson, Henkel... the list is endless! Even the biggest pet food makers are guilty of it.

You will be hard pushed to find a multinational of Unilever or P&G's size that isn't involved in animal testing one way or another. I think P&G gets a lot of attention for it just because they are so big. They aren't really any worse than the rest.

spoodles..

A certain amount of animal testing is kind of essential for some products. My objection with P&G is the conditions in which the animals are kept, the mistreatment that goes on and P&G's complete lack of responsibility - they just don't care. If a company has to test on animals, I'd rather they did it with some sort of remorse and respect for the animals they're using.

Unilever have admitted their involvement in animal testing on plenty of occaisions, but also given clear examples of exactly what testing is carried out, how minimal this is and shown the conditions in which animals are kept. There's also a long list of products that were once tested on animals and are no longer, showing huge steps forward made by Unilever by investing time and money into researching alternatives.

I am against animal testing, but after years and years of it being "the norm" by these companies, it is going to take time and effort to phase it out all together. I would much rather buy a product manufactured by a company that is concerned about animal testing and that is making huge efforts to do something about it, rather than a company that just doesn't give a sh!t.

When possible i buy the Marks and Spencer detergents or Amway Sa8 so iavoid the P&G products or Unilever. However i am unable to now use most of Persil or Surf range as i developed a rather nasty rash and am allergic to the perfumes in Persil biological and colour care. I am stuck with Daz, Ariel or fairy non bio as these don't affect me. Sometimes we are limited to what we can use due to ingredients. No joke the current formulation of Persil colour liquid gave me a migraine and had to take some really strong migraine tablets. What the hell do these companies put in these products?

@liberatordeluxe, I've never had a problem with Persil. Have you tried Almat? It's brilliant stuff and I am reliably informed that the issues with clumping have now been resolved. Might be worth a try given the low price? Don't use too much of it though, I can get away with using about 50/60ml for a full load - it's strong stuff

What you referring to? The liquid or powder? I prefer the liquid because there are no fillers. The Almat powder is mostly Sodium Sulfate i believe, a bulking agent.

advertising

I find it interesting/amusing that the only ad that names a product in a thread that is basically bashing P & G (and I agree with the bashing) is for one of their products.

Comfort:
Dihydrogenated Tallowoylethyl Hydroxyethylmonium Methosulfat, I think that means that the cationic surfactant is derived from tallow. Surprisingly it also contains loads of different greases almost like a skin moisturizer. Had a discussion with Launderess a few years ago about grease in FS, now I stand corrected and hang my head in shame ;-)

Lenor:
Distearoylethyl/Dipalmitoylethyl Dimonium Chloride, I guess "palmito" means palm oil, there is also Coconutoil in the list. The "stearo" part indicates to stearic acid, which could be either made from vegetable or animal fats.

Personally would not use Comfort because of the tallow. I`m not a vegetarian, but I prefer my FS and cosmetics as vegan as possible.

Thanks Mr BoilWash regarding fabric conditioner. Trouble with Lenor is they don't list their ingredients on their website like Comfort does so you have to ask them which is a pain.

You need a degree to interpret all those chemical names lol Thanks for the link. Lenor's ingredients sound more natural than Comfort lol
