My Power Book G4 would not open the new Adobe. I called Apple and they said I need the 10.5 upgrade which is not available.

Is there anyone out there who would let me buy, beg, borrow, or steal the disc.

Thank you

Michael

Wait a second mike. A disk wont help because the file format will still be the same whether you download it or have it on a disk. I'm a bit confused, what is 10.5? These files should be completely Mac/Windows friendly so something is off.

What version of Adobe reader are you using? Did you download the lastest and greatest version from here, it is totally free: http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Maybe some of our Mac power users can help as well?

I need the disc to upgrade my computer so that it will accept the Adobe reader. 10.1 is the original program (?) in the computer, and the 10.5 will do the trick. This is the last model before the Intell whatever.

Yes,

It downloaded successfully to the pdf. files but then said that my computer could not operate the system.

Still confused because these should be compatible from adobe 7 and greater, 7 is at least four years old now. So if you have 10 something it should work just fine.

Mac guys?

"Apple and they said I need the 10.5"

Robert, I think is talking about his OS...

Mike, yes because Apple wants you have a newer machine. Your PowerBook G4 should have 10.3.9 (Panther) or 10.4 (Tiger) on it. Since you are still on the PowerPC (G3, G4, G5) platform, you are limited to what you can get for your Mac, new Macs are intel-based like a PC. Currently, OS 10.4.x (Tiger) is as old as they support on their site, but if you could post back what OS you have (click the Apple in the top-left corner, then "About This Computer") I can post a link for a version that will work. Apple Preview should work in reality, have you tried opening the file with that application yet?

Below is the link to version 9.44 for OS 10.4

but any other AW.org pdf's coming in via Safari or Foxfire come in just fine.

But understand Mike, those are old style .pdfs with a much lower resolution. I don't even own (nor would I use it if I did) that old version of the software anymore.

But did you try Tim's suggestion to not view the file in Acrobat, but view it in the Mac's Preview program. I tried it on my 2009 macbook and it worked perfectly in Preview.

Yeah, but

that's all I have, and that's why I'm asking for the 10.5 disc so I can upgrade instead of buying a new computer.

Tim's link produced the same experience as yesterday.

Exactly how did you view the file in Preview.

Thank you both for your help.

I have NO experience with the site I'm about to link to. But they have older versions of Adobe Reader, and claim that they are careful with screening for malware, etc. They have downloads for Adobe Reader going back quite a ways. (The top listing is the current version. Scroll down to see the older versions, all the way back to 3.01!) Adobe Reader 7 is listed, and that should run on 10.3 Panther.

Perhaps someone with a Mac has had experience with this site.

Incidentally, upgrading the OS will help...but only a bit. PowerPC machines have seriously limited support, but 10.4 Tiger is better supported than 10.3 Panther. 10.5 Leopard probably has slightly better support, but is generally said to be slower than 10.4 Tiger and will NOT run Classic MacOS (OS 9 and before) software.

Preview says that the file is either corrupt or unrecognizable.

Guys, I'm in over my head, falling deeper and deeper into the computer abyss, and gettting very anxious, so I'm going to stop now and repeat what Apple told me I needed:

The upgrade disc for the 10.5 operating system. Does anyone have it and may I buy, rent, or use it.

Limitations are painful, and mine is now glaring. But that's part of life. I'll be fine.

Small correction to the above

I said that upgrading the OS on a PowerBook would only help a bit. Adobe still has downloads for 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard that would work on the new AW.org PDFs, even if they aren't the current Adobe Reader.

The "only help a bit" I was thinking of was more of general software support. Support for older Macs is becoming seriously limited. This thought hits my mind first whenever this sort of question comes up.

Low End Mac has a swap list where it should be possible to get a copy of a newer version of OS X.

One important note: 10.4 Tiger will run on any PowerBook G4. 10.5 Leopard won't officially run on older G4 systems. I hope the Apple representative took the time to make sure that 10.5 would work in this particular situation, but one never knows.

Mike the only upgrade disk I have is for Snow Leopard 10.6.3, I'm not a mac person so I have no idea if this would work on your older mac.

But I might have found a solution for you, check out this link. It for Adobe Reader 7 (which should work on the new .pdf files) says its compatible with:

Minimum system requirements are:
ユ PowerPCᆴ G3, G4, or G5 processor
ユ Mac OS X v.10.2.8 or 10.3
ユ 128MB of RAM (256MB recommended)
ユ 495MB of available hard-disk space
ユ CD-ROM drive

Would this work for you?

Hi John

Thanks, back at Mac, and they said that a tiger or leopard would work even a 10.5.8 is possible with the available upgrades,

BUT (Hi Robert)

the snow leopard will not work, which I did not ask about. They must be reading our website ;'D Thanks. Wish you had a plain Leopard instead of the very rare and elusive snow leopard.

10.6 Snow Leopard will NOT work. It requires an Intel processor (MacBook, Mac Pro, and newer iMac/Mac mini models.)

Many people using older PowerPC Macs are choosing 10.4 now over 10.5. One loses features, and some software support--but the argument goes that the support isn't much better for 10.5. On the positive side, 10.4 runs faster on older hardware, and still supports Classic mode for Classic MacOS software. I ASSUME that 10.4 can still be updated high enough to support Adobe Reader. For that matter, the Preview in 10.4 or 10.5 might be good enough that Adobe Reader won't be needed.

Another important point: the type of install disk is important. Some are designed to install on specific models only. (These were included in the box with the specific computers.) One wants a retail version that installs on anything. If I recall right, gray label means it's a system specific disk, and a black label is retail and will work on any model supported by that version of OS X.

Another thought: web browser support is getting pretty bad for PowerPC Macs. TenFourFox is a project to port Firefox back to 10.4/10.5. Here's a link to their site:

Mike -

I suggest you keep your Mac-OS as is with 10.3.9 for now, and install a copy of Adobe Reader 7.0.8. You can work on updating your OS to a different version later on if needed. Eventually browser issues will force you to a newer Mac (my 2001 Mac with 10.4.11 is a paper weight due to the outdated WI-Fi security protocols).

Version 7.0.8 of Acrobat will work with 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4. From what I can tell, most versions of Adobe 8 will only work with 10.4.2 or higher.

The link below will take you to a download site for 7.0.8. If it doesn't automatically download, click the link on the page that says -

"Please click here: Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.8 (21.48MB)"

- to initiate the request.

Let us know if this works as Robert's Adobe files are programed to work with 7 or higher.

Ben

EGADS! What a relief!

Thanks everyone. I was making an installation error somehow somewhere.

So for the last hour, I have been trying to get the Adobe installed which the Finder says I uploaded last night. Somehow it wasn't taking.

Relaxed and plugging away inside Applications, then Applications OS, this file, that file, dragging this, dragging that, pretty green plus sings blinking, confusing Acrobat

with Adobe, whatever,.....Suddenly, the red and white flag showed up, and I passed the tests in seconds.

Great thanks to the gentle Senator from Iowa and the hot chick in his icon who sent me detailed help thru the Aworg Messaging System.

I love you, BEN. I hope your hot chick doesn't mind.

YAY for me not having to sit in the corner with the Dunce Cap on.
