Hey Y'all, I just scored a vintage maytag range for only a buck and a quarter, down from $350.00. While these things abound in the north and midwest, they're rare as hen's teeth down here in Cajunland. The humidity rusts everything to pieces!

I could use some help with the date code and any other info or wisdom you all may have to offer. It appears that there is some chrome trim or logo missing from the vertical between the oven and stove top controls around the vents. I'll have to run that down on line. Mechanically The burners all work, but some of the control valves are sticky and need cleaning and or lubrication. I wasn't able to light the oven, but I just got it home this evening. I'll look into the oven next week after work.

Now if I can just get my maulers on a glass back, center dial gas dryer, to match my washer resto-mod project so I'm not forced to run the wide body electric HOH that I have. [this post was last edited: 9/21/2014-22:56]

Progress

I still haven't been able to putz around with the oven yet. What with geting the garden tilled and planted for fall/winter, after a ton of rain has FINALLY passed and being on call at work, time has been short. I did score the Maytag owners manual and cook book for the old girl for $4.99! Can you dig it?

People have mentioned in the archives about a "massive iron plate" in these ovens. Do you really mean that wimpy little piece of 1/8" - 3/16" that forms the bottom of the oven? Man, y'all had me expecting a 2' x 2' piece of 1" cast iron or steel plate. Unless the "massive iron plate" is missing from my stove, the sheet steel that I see doesn't add bupkis to the weight of the unit. This thing is just heavy friggin duty all the way! I reckon my perspective is altered by the fact that I wrestle with heavy iron all day. I was really blown away when I found out that this unit has a vent damper on the oven control to sequester heat like a Chambers stove. Excellent !

If anyone has a line on the chrome emblem/trim for the backsplash/control panal, please let me know. I'm currently searching for a rust bucket with the chrome intact to canibalize for parts.

There's rain forcast for this weekend,so I should have time to sort out the oven.

Later!

Maytag Dutch Oven

Do you have the instruction/Cook book that goes with the range? My mother used to be a salesgirl/bookkeeper at Abbeville Lumber Company and they sold this Maytag range. When they were discontinued, mom asked for one of the left over instruction/cookbooks. Copywrite 1949, it contains some tasty & easy to prepare recipes. Having never had that range we never attempted the "cooking with the gas turned off." There were menus and recipes utilizing this feature. I have found copies online in varying states of condition and discovered two versions both appear identical. One has two range models the other about 10. The recipes are the same in both with one exception--the White Cake recipe, the later version calls for light corn syrup and a different mixing method. I found my copies using eBay and Amazon.

My mother still cooks on the Tappan Doughboy stove her parents bought when she was in high school. My grandparents built and all electric home in 1960 and mom and dad built a new home in 1961 at a cost of $5,600.00 (a 3 br one bath 'ranch style') My parents bought the gas water heater and range my grandparents had and added them to their new home. The water heater was just replaced a year ago too.

Cook book / instructions

Yeah, I got the book for 4.99 on ebay. Nice looking kitchen and stove in the pics too. Any suggestions on lubing the sticky valves? Graphite or penetrating oil? It isn't oxygen or acetylene so reacativity shouldn't be an issue.

Valve Cream

There is a lubricant made for gas range/stove valves called valve cream, I've used it on the OKM and it was a huge help.

Vintage Stove Places

I can't remember the name of the company off hand, but it's only available from a few places - mostly in California I think.
