Filter-Flo Query

In the 1970s, the apartment complex I lived in had filter-flow commercial machines. Harvest Gold, no less! I was always disappointed in that my loads always came out with "dots" of (I assumed) lint on them. I began to wash everything inside-out to minimize this deficiency. My aunt had a FF that had the same problem when I would crank up a load in her machine. Sometimes I would use a different commercial laundrymat with the same routine. I was careful not to overload, tried different detergents, different fabric softeners, always with the "dots" on dark colors from the holes in the washbasket during spin. I have never seen this addressed here on aw.o - has no one else ever had this anomaly?

my mother had the same issue with her filter flo during the 70's.....could be several factors, small fragments of lint left from previous loads, the types of material/fabric of that era giving off or attracting more lint....

it's hard to say, mom always had a hard time with lint from hers, she always thought someday when this one died she would get something with a better lint trap system....I run my FF without the filter most times, and don't have an issue....but it could have been from what I stated above, or hard/scale water, or any number of factors....

I always thought it may have been her V12 being a single speed may have been a little rougher on fabrics, causing piling......a cousin with the same machine had the same problem.....but other relatives with SpeedQueens, Whirlpools, Maytags didn't seem to have those issues.....

Light Colored Dots On Clothing

This can happen on spin drain machines because the water is being forced through the tubs holes as the clothing is held against the tub. GE tried to address this problem by changing the hole pattern on the sides of the wash basket. The light colored spots were probably a combination of lint and mineral deposits from non-phosphate powered detergent.

 

Spinning while draining a perforated basket wash tub has never improved the performance of any washer and has caused various problems, which is likely why every washer that has the ability to drain before spinning does so.

I think...

I have that problem when I use too much detergent. Try less detergent or a second rinse, see what happens. I have had that occur in Kenmore's and 1-18's, seems to me to be a soap problem, not a machine problem. Try an HE detergent?

I have used more Filter-Flo machines than I can count and I have never, EVER encountered this problem. When you're using a commercial machine you have no way of knowing what lurks in the outer tub and in the hoses. I think we could all do a thread on what we've discovered in our vintage washers when removing the washbaskets.

I had a Viking version of the Filter-Flo when I had the house up in Brownsburg-Chatham years ago and I also had the 'white dot' problem. I chalked that up to hard well water - the thing that 'cured' this was a second rinse with a cup of vinegar (yeah, vinegar!) in the rinse water.

Could this be transmission oil leaking into the wash?  As I remember, GE Filter-Flo washers are known for this.  We had GE Filter-Flo washers when I was growing up, dad was a GE serviceman.  Every time my mom had oil spots on here white nursing uniforms, dad had to replace the transmission.
