Final drain not complete - Kitchenaide Imperial Dishwasher - Dual Cycle

Hi,

I have an old K.I.D. by Hobart that just recently stopped fully pumping out the final rinse cycle. When I run the next load the machine floods as it seems that there is too much water. In order to fully empty the machine I need to run the final drain cycle 3 times. Pump seems to be working fine, pumps out all other cycles completely...just the final drain seems to cut short.

I blew out the drain lines and got a new drain hose, no blockage there, seems to be a timing issue on the final pump out...is this possible?

Any thoughts or advice appreciated!

If you think the final drain is being cut short, I suggest you time the length of a drain period at any of the other prewash or wash periods vs. the length of time for the final drain period.  That may give you a clue.

Drain solenoid

You need to check and see if the drain solenoid is working properly and is not hung up with any sort of debris. It is a 90 degree valve which can trap debris at the turning point and hang up the plunger inside the valve.

Drain the machine as much as you can to begin with and then turn off the power to it. Remove the clamp that secures the drain hose to the black pump housing. Then remove the wires from the solenoid and then take the solenoid out of the machine.
Be ready to catch the leftover water from the sump of the machine with some sort of catch basin. Now you will be able to see if anything is stuck inside the pump outlet, the drain hose and then the valve itself.

You may be amazed at what can find its way down thru the pump and into that drain area.

If it has debris in it, clean it out. Do be advised that the plungers inside this valve did fail and may not be fully opening so I suggest you take the valve apart and see what condition it is in. When energized with 115 volts, the plunger should move completely up to clear the passageway for the water. If there is a problem with the valve, you can purchase a new straight thru valve either on ebay or from Hobart which still uses the valves in some of the under counter machines.

KDS-15 KA DW not pumping out all water on final drain period

As suggested above you need to time the drain periods, the final drain period should be at least as long as the other drain periods.

 

Usually when I have had this problem reported to me the DW is not draining completely at each drain period and the water builds up as the cycle progresses.

 

But it is easy to listen and see if the water is completely done draining before the drain valve closes and the machine begins filling for the next rinse or wash cycle. You should hear the machine continuing to try to drain for at least 15 seconds after water flow stops before it closes the drain valve and starts filling again.

 

The most common draining problems with a KA KD 15-16 or 17 DW is either a clogged drain valve as suggested by Steve above or a bad drain impeller.

 

Other than these likely problems you either have an intermittent drain valve coil that gets hot and goes open, [ you can test by wiring a test light or meter to it and see if the DV closes before the light goes off ] or if you find that the motor and DV are shutting off in less than one minute for the final drain period, you have a bad timer.

Pretty sure it is the timer, will clean the solenoid in any event, where can I get a new timer?
