FINALLY! ANOTHER CHILDHOOD MACHINE FOUND!

I've had a tiresome week, did my mock exams and yesterday I was poorly. I was well rested and able to get up to my Granny's today to do some cleaning in the shed. However no cleaning was done because something new greeted me at the door of my shed...

You may have heard me whining about being on the hunt for a Hotpoint WD22 Washer Dryer, I'm happy to say that hunt is over!!!

Today I got a late birthday present (turned 18 last month), a Polar White WD23 from 1996. The WD22 was the 1994/95 model and this is the 1996 version of that model. The brushes in the motor were that bad that it tripped the switch but new brushes and a clean up has sorted that out. The bearings have about a millimeter of play in them but do not rumble etc. so I'd say I have a few years left in them because this isn't a daily runner. I added a mains neon too because I felt it was only right that these models had one (previous models before the WD22 had mains neons). It's great that it didn't need much work done to it and all that needs doing now is a boil wash and a good clean up of the cabinet. Oh and just like my Aunt's machine which was dominant part of my childhood I will be putting one of those stickers on the lid about draining arrangements if I can transfer one over.

James!  Congratulations!  I have just got the 2nd of my 3 childhood machines, there is nothing quite like the feeling of finding something that is so familiar after a good few years!

another great find there, am I right in thinking that the washer dryers have a different spinning method 2 the washing machines? anti-crease tumbles between spins as opposed 2 the "stuck 2 the drum" style spin?

I never really had much experience with washer dryers, so it'll be interesting 2 know how well it dries.

Hi all,

Got the cabinet cleaned up and got one of those stickers stuck on the lid just like my Aunt's machine had. Put it in it's new home under the drainer and did a half load of towels and a bath mat just to try it out. It works perfect! Exactly like my Aunt's did it was like I stepped back into my childhood, I'm still pinching myself that I have it at last! It does put the WD61 in a tricky situation now though, it was only filling in for this and now that I have it I really cant see the point in keeping it, I could keep it for parts in case this one needs anything or I could sell it because it is not terribly old. I would love to have a WM73 and the dryer to match. I'm going to take some videos tomorrow hopefully if there is a sufficient load.

It's so weird to finally have one at last, I really wouldn't mind finding a New Gen or an Ultima now, who knows maybe a Liberator will be crossed off my list next!

The automatic collection does need sorted out badly, I don't really know what models to keep and look out for so that I have a good all-round collection that represents most of the ranges and most of the different category of machine. This machine will be my only example of the Early WM range and will be my only example of a Mk2 Hotpoint washer dryer (do you get me???). Now I need a MK1 washer dryer which is from model 9900 to 9935 (I think).

Mike, I uploaded pictures of the WD61 internals back when I got that. This is the exact same apart from the absence of the jacket over the heater box. Thank you for the comment in regards to the WD23's appearance, I hope you like it even more now that it's cleaned now. Lucky that it's not yellowed either!

Neons

Hello James, have you fitted the mains neon light yourself?? I couldnt remember if the original machines had one on!!

Hi Mike,

Yes I fitted one myself because it had the later style on/off switch with the two small spades for a neon. All of the 1000rpm Hotpoint washer/dryers up until the WD22 had a mains neon and I felt that it just didn't look right without one (even its washing machine counterpart the WM22 had a mains neon). So I took out the blank where the mains neon is fitted on the previous models and fitted a lens and a neon I had spare from a WM22. I think the machine looks more complete with it. Do you? Or are you against it?

Hi James, I thinks it looks great, looks like it should always have been like that....I admire you enthusiasm and energy for getting stuck into finding your wanted washers and then taking the time to fix and maintain them...its great to see a younger generation getting stuck into this fab hobby!!

Thanks Mike! I just love finding particular models I've grown fond of by learning about the different models through this site and mentally making a catalogue of what you want in particular. Then digging into my drawers and cupboards of accumulated parts and fixing it up. I tell my family about how simple the problems are and share my shock with them of how someone can easily throw out a classic that was unknowingly easy to fix. Then the nail biting moment when I pull out the dial or push the button to turn it on for the first time once fixed and seeing it click back into life. Before taking the machine into the shed a water test is done. Then polishing it up while it does a boil wash to clean out anything, it smells and feels rewarding!

I'm going down to that treasure trove behind the local electrical retailer on Friday again, who knows what I will find. Your 9900 looks stunning, bet it sounds and operates differently in so many ways to the later ones. I'd love a 9901 with that lovely 80s yellow and green text but any 99 series would be nice to own, maybe the 1200 99** model or take a gamble with a 800rpm washer/dryer!

My Grandma had a Hotpoint Aquarius 1000 Washer Dryer WD22 from 03rd Jan 2003, after the demise of her Indesit 850W, up until Oct/Nov 2008.

After the bearings went, on the Indesit, I put my foot down, after 09 yrs of constant troubles with the 850W, I gave Grandma 02 options, I'd seen our WD22 reconned in our local 02nd hand shop, Coopers Electrical, then saw it up for sale, for £80, the Aquarius was option 01, option 02, was a Zanussi JetSystem 1600 Washer Dryer WJD1667W, which, 'sironically, I now own (as of Oct 2008), she opted for the WD22, as the JetSystem, was retailing at £450, at the time we were on the hunt.

She had it for 03 yrs, before handing over to the carera of my Grandpa, whose laundry was frequently lost at the launderette, infuriating to his carers, it'd blown her main house electrics fuse numerous times, when unbalanced, it tended to jump, which then tripped the switch.

Me, being the only one with the most know how & know to, in the fam, set it up & provided the carers with all the necessary info, & always left it set up for the carers, upon each visit (always finding the super rinse option deselected, after me having selected it), on the next visit.

When Coopers first delivered the WD22 to Grandma, even after a demo from me, she still managed to break it on her first use > she pulled the wash knob out to switch it on, selected the drying time & pulled the knob off the machine, she learnt after that incident .

Sadly, after my Grandpa passed on in late April 2007, it ended up in storage, in Grandma's friend's garage, I was planning on keeping it as part of the start up to my collection, but when I happened across my JetSystem, my Mum pretty much forced both Grandma & I to sell the Aquarius. The people who bought it, came from the local vicinity, where I bought my JetSystem, 'sironic really.

I noticed the pulse spin function on this machine, which rather intrigued me, until I found out the functionality of it, via a Hotpoint brochure.
I assume it's something to do with the GEC motor? I only ask, because, I think that Hotpoint used the idea off Servis, because my Servis Sapphire 1300 Washer Dryer 9635, also uses the pulse spin function with the 20 sec burst at 1300RPM.

I've currently also, got a Hotpoint Ultima 9566, which also has the Pulse Spin too.

When we did finally sell the WD22, we got £40 for it.

Does yours have the deep, or shallow rim drum? Ours also, had a vent that hung down into the drum aperture, rather than the vent being integrated into the door seal, like most, maybe you could post a pic of the drum aperture for clarification, face onto the machine, rather than from above?

Great news on your newly found machine James.

Always very satisfactory when it happens and, just to reinforec what Mike has said, it is great that you have the skills to really get your hands dirty with your machines.
Skills I would love to develop, but have never been electrically gifted despite getting a grade A at CDT Technology.

Am fine making things look pretty, but show me a wiring diagram and I wouldn't know where to start.

Anyways - will have a gander at the videos soon and happy tinkering.
