Finally got the 66 Maytag top-loader

Hi all, well I did not vanish off the face of the earth - I spent two weeks building a garage (yes, you read that right) and last week catching up on accumulated stuff at work. Finally, last week, I convinced hubby to trek to the fair city of Trois-Rivieres to pick up this nifty Maytag dishwasher! It may be one of the first series Maytag produced in 1966!

The machine works beautifully - no leaks anywhere! The inside is good, but the rolling rack is rust damaged.
I am just amazed at the features of this dishwasher - the rack on the right of the rusty one can be removed or put at an angle. You could wash all kinds of pots and pans in this baby! It has on-the-dial selections for Rinse and Hold, Heavy Wash, Regular Wash and a plate warmer. There are also two push buttons to select Wash and Dry or Wash Only (early energy-saver??). I guess that was to follow KA's Utility and Utensil cycle that had no-heat drying. Anyway, just wanted to share!

I have wanted to look closely at one of these forever. I remember when Maytag introduced these in --1969??? I remember seeing one at Gimbel's on 33rd Street but a pesky salesman kept shooing me away.

IIRC this model had a ridiculously huge capacity. Could you give us some close ups of the cycle dial, the dispensers and the racking, showing how you get to the bottom rack? Was this a Maytag where plates went on top and glassware on the bottom? Looks like racking for plates on both levels.

Very cool! Those early pump designs wash like crazy and were much quieter than the later belt-drive designs. This top-loader only lasted a few years and then Maytag dropped it completely even as other brands carried them for a while longer into the 70's.

Does the detergent dispenser work? They had problems with those in the early models, but that may have been repaired early on in it's life. The "Wash Only" is exactly what you thought - heater off.

The upper arm is fed by a flexible hose running up the back of the cabinet and into the lid. You can just make it out in the pic with the lid up.

You might want to get some rack repair goo on that rolling rack so it doesn't get worse and leave rust stains on your fine china. It may not look the best unless you can find white, but it will preserve it well.

OH this is very cool! Does it have a serial number with some letters following the numbers? Very interested to see what the date is.

I've only ever seen one other of these (besides the one in Newton) behind an appliance store 4 or 5 years ago. Should have known then how scarce they are.

Thats stunning. I cant wait to get my top loader finished I need to put new hoses on. I am nervous about doing it so getting the nerve to do so. That is a great find!
