First Maytag dishwasher commercial

This is probably the first Maytag commercial, featuring their first dishwashers. You can even see the Top Loading model, in avocado green.

Maytag was the first automatic my Mom ever owned.  I think she got it sometime in late 70s during a kitchen remodel.  There are two things I remember about it.  1) it was LOUD!  It was obvious that the spray was forceful.  2) the racks were reversed.  Plates went on the top rack and cups, glasses went on the bottom rack. 

 

Prior to the Maytag, she had a dishwasher model called the "Jimmy, Johnny, Billy"!  It was cheap but unreliable!

It was a great dishwasher. I owned a portable one, in avocado green.
I love the reversed loading.

I wish there was a longer video of the wash action somewhere on the web.

Maytag dishwasher

I never owned one but have a friend that had one from the early 80s and I operated it many times. The loading capacity was out of this world and it cleaned so well without prerinsing. I wish they made this dishwasher today. The only downside was it was noisy!

They were noisy, especially when draining. But they washed well, and you could put almost anything anywhere in those racks.

one of my aunt add one of these classic maytag dishwasher

1 of my aunts that was her second marriage had a classic maytag dishwasher it was the built in model front was red she replace it when her kitchen was redone she also had a classic center dial maytag washer dryer set I think they where a608 she decided to give them to afamily member and replace them with a Kenmore direct drive until she switch to a frontload set

My! My! I have never seen that Mike Farrell commercial before! That avocado Maytag portable looks exactly like the one I remember one of the neighbours had in the Montreal suburb of Pointe-Claire where I grew up. She also had a Youngstown Kitchens 30-inch dishwasher sink...that's why she bought the Maytag...LOL

Paul, Mike Farrell also had an ad for the Maytag Porta Dryer.  I think that came out before the dishwasher.  He was one of the first tv spokesman for Maytag that I remember.

Here’s the link for the porta-dryer. We had one of those in our appartment when I was growing up. Slow at drying and the drum was small.

I remember when Jessie White was the human in their ads. John had one of the portable DWs. The springs were so strong to hold up that lid that the mounting eventually cracked the back wall of the tank.

How very odd

Commercial goes on about the Maytag "Port-a-dryer" but doesn't mention the matching twin tub washer.

While suppose it is possible, cannot imagine someone doing wash in a full sized Maytag (or any other) automatic, then being lumbered with that small capacity and not very powerful heating dryer.

Another thing; notice how all the married women are referred to as just that; the poor single girl gets only her Christian and surname to drive home a point.

The first Maytag dishwashers with the figure 8 shaped filter and heating element had an 18 minute main wash and with the heat and detergent, there were quite pronounced glass etching problems.

Porta-dryer with full size washer

As I remember, you could purchase a stacking kit to mount this dryer on top of a full sized washer. Probably for those with only room for a washer, in their kitchen , for example.

I remember thinking that Mike Farrell was good looking also. I remember a sexier Maytag commercial where he was out is some sort of field with rows of womens' legs sticking up in the air and Mike saying some line like, "Crazy". Pity they put him to such bad use in MASH after Wayne Rogers.

Obviously I'm a huge fan of Maytag RR dishwashers. Most of them are loud but I don't give a damn about loud dishwashers unless they're lame like the GE Potscrubbers with the clown-shoe wash arm. I still wonder why today's dishwashers need an hour or more to wash a load that the 'Tags could do in 30 minutes (I'm not counting dry time in either example).

They have to wash so long because they fill with so little water that they cannot get strong water pressure like the older dishwashers so they spray with the force of  a 90 year old man voiding through a prostate the size of a softball and let the enzymes eat the food soil for an hour and a half. Sadly, the way most people use a dishwasher, it's all that is needed because they rinse the dishes clean in the sink before loading them.

We had

the Maytag convertible-portable with the "figure 8" filter, and we never had any glass etching. It ran well for nearly 20 yeaes with only two fairly minor repairs.

The biggest expense in running a dishwasher is not the electricity to run it, but the energy to heat the water

As for the Porta-Washer, I remmber it being released a bit after the Porta-Dryer

Mike Farrell is still good looking.

Ahh the venerable Reverse Rack. Im in the process of having to scrap one of mine, the bearing is starting to go on the pump which is effecting the detergent dispenser, that and the racks are about two washes away from turning to dust.

 

I never had any rejections from a RR machine, and I love the loud sound, especially the drain. I wish it offered a heated final rinse or something heated without me telling it to heat, but, theyre great machines and I love the caverness capacity.
