Can anyone reccomend a flash player that won't download a bunch o crap? Tried Adobe and it took me hours to get the virus and junk back out. Searched on line but when I read the reviews they all seem to send crap. I'm still (sadly) running XP and my confuser is old, but there has to be a way to view my "art" videos!

Adobe 'flash' IS a virus, so ridden with security issues for an app given so much system control. But it has found its way into so many web designs that 2/3 of the internet-- including virtually all 'media' sites like networks-- are completely inaccessable if you don't have the latest version. Which has been incompatible with my 17yo system for roughly 4 years.

My reaction has been "f" them, if they want my eyeballs make the gawddam thing compatible, even with reduced features on older versions. It's readily doable. But if their message to me is "f" you if you don't have the latest version, my message is "f" you PERIOD.

Flash is a Virus

And is therefore dubbed "Flush" by many, (i.e. "Flush your sanity down the loo with security glitches, and slow performance."). Performance gets worse and worse each version. Someone explain to me why a 1.4GHz Pentium-M can watch youtube while a 2.8GHz Northwood P4 struggles?

An example of flush's problems can be found in some comparisons online. For example, when Windows NT4 (IIRC) went out of support, it had around 60 known vulnerabilities. Flush for that OS had over 400... (It maybe have been Windows 98, 2000 or XP - BUT, it still should be enough to send shivers down your spine). (or JavaSludge) has similar issues.

Unfortunately both of these giants more or less "own" the internet. Newer web standards, like HTML5 might help reduce flush's presence. One can only hope.

@arbilab - Is it at all possible to try mobile sites? I understand Flash was never supported on iOS, so *maybe* that is an issue for your older machine. Although, you seem quite technically adept, so if there was a way, you would have exploited it by now.

I was a hardware engineer for Dell but from a cable drop I don't know how to access mobile sites. My response to websites demanding I have 'the latest flash' is "go flash yourself".

For compatible destinations my 400MHz P2 runs faster on W98 than a 3GHz P4 on XP. And W98 is immune to any 'modern' virus. Except say, Flash. Which if I allowed it to update like it nags me to do, would likely crash my entire OS. This is why I say Flash is a virus.

Try searching for VLC or MPC-HC. Both are self-contained (no codec installs) and play Flash files. VLC also comes with a browser plugin that eliminates the need for Adobe's flash plugin.

Adobe Flash is updated often.  Firefox may block content from running on outdated versions and instead puts up an advisory that an updated is needed.  You can click "Activate Adobe Flash" and the content will still run.

Firefox has a function to check whether plug-ins are up-to-date.

Adobe's Flash plugin was the biggest single cause of headaches on my entire system. Sooo glad to finally be rid of it.

Is Robert aware of the risk and trouble it's causing?

No Glenn I'm not, what risk is associated with an old flash animation? It is the only one left on any sites that I run. It's never caused an issue before in it's 12 year history.

JeffG - There is absolutely no need to be rude, I will not stand for that, this isn't a newspaper comments section.

I think DADoES was being sarcastic in that the flash Unimatic on the front page is not causing problems... FWIW, I seem to have no problem with Flash, or keeping it updated. But, I have a new desktop that I built myself running Win 7. I believe most of the problems lie with outdated operating systems. If you insist on continuing to run 17 year old computers with old, unsupported operating systems, you're asking for trouble. Not that new machines are perfect or flawless, because they aren't.
