Five inches of water flooded my laundry room with the heavy rainfall received over the weekend. Is the motor in a Whirlpool Duet washer and the dryer mounted high enough above the floor not to be affected by the water?

Have been hearing about the terrible flooding down there. Sorry to learn it's invaded your home.
Don't know the answer to your question but will give this thread a bump so someone who knows can provide information.

5 inches?...you cutting it close, if not for the most part, some part of that motor is touching water......
dryer motors are usually attached to the base, lucky if there is an inch of clearance underneath......
FL motors are usually attached to the drum unit, may be a bit higher up, but rather still close to the bottom....unless its direct drive.....
sorry to hear your going through all of this......
too late for it now.....but when you get through all of this, consider the drawers for these units, placing up on cinder blocks, or building a platform to keep them off the floor......
not a bad idea for heaters and water heaters if this turns into a common concern for the future....
if a gas burner comes in contact with water, the unit is usually tossed out....
keep us posted as you can......stay safe

You might have spared the motor, but the MCU is on the floor , and is likely trashed. If it was murky water get rid of the machine. If clean water, unplug for a few days and dry it out.
The motor for the pump is probably drowned since it is on the base. Make sure the circuit breakers are shut off before touching the machines.
I am sorry for your area's misfortune. It does not take a hurricane anymore to produce terrible flooding. As Martin said, it probably would be a good idea to elevate these or their replacements.

I would have them checked by factory service. Through your homeowners and flood insurance. You also have a year after the initial claim...just in case. You never know the adjuster might junk them at the time of inspection. Sorry for that mess to clean up Mixguy. Family and pets OK?

Just learned the President declared state of emergency in 4 parishes (counties). Far more widespread damage. That list needs to be amended, a mad cajun feeling treated unfairly will become very vocal! (that is putting it nicely and as "politically correct" as I can at the moment)

I contacted a service technician who is married to good friend of mine and awaiting him to call me back. I have located photographs of other duet sport washers and dryers and found the washer's drive motor is located above the water line. Is there a separate motor for the pump? The dryer is a different story, the heating elements are near the base. The flood water was clear.
I have located used pedestals for the washer and dryer, contacted them by email and making arrangement to purchase as soon as the roads to get out of town are clear. My freezers in the room were also in the water and will be placed on concrete blocks as soon as I can get to a Home Depot or Lowes about 8 to 12 miles away.
Picked up the flood water using a 1 gal wet/dry vac emptying over 30 times to keep the water down as best I could. Great for defrosting the freezers! making clean up easier and much faster!
I am single and live alone. My mother has never had water get this high before and was within a inch of getting in her house. We're all hoping that people riding by go slow enough not to create waves to push water into her home that has been spared since it was built in 1961. Water has always drained fast when the rain stopped.
So many friends and relatives have inches to feet of water in their homes I can't out to help because roads out of town cross canal that have overflowed, water on the road too deep to pass thru. Thankful I have power, gas and clean running water and no sewage backup that have had due to hurricanes in the past. Thank you all for the kind words and suggestions, will keep you all updated!

Other thing you should consider is installing automatic emergency drain pumps in your basement. I don't know how fast the water entered but a good system can drain several gallons of water per minute.
Depending on the age of your Duets, the motor may be near the base. On mine the motors are connected to the bottom of the outer drum, 4-6" above the floor. So if you have the belt drive version you may be OK. If direct drive as later models you should be fine on that point -but and this is a big one - on my duets the computer that controls things is mounted upright at the bottom of the unit. Even a couple of inches of water and it will be wet.
Hoping all the water recedes quickly for you folks down there and you get the help you need. We could certainly use some that rain up here in Michigan, we are 4-5" short of rain this summer, but we do have a flash flood waring at the moment, so we may get some much needed rain.

Flash Flood Warning tonight
AS I compose this message I am in the area of another Flash flood warning! Cleaned out a blocked culvert and removed the debris covering a storm drain in the front yard to allow water to drain away faster. The lawn was dry enough today for mowing.
Have 9 trees on the 100' x 100' lot. have shade most of the day to keep the A/C costs down considering how hot is has been. Have had more humid nights than usual this summer.
Inspection of appliances taking place tomorrow! Will update on what I learn and what has to be done to have them in working order.
Both washer and dryer pedestals will be picked tomorrow also, my most direct route to get them is still closed to travel. Car repair this afternoon made me too late to pick up today. The owner agreed to hold them for me until can to his location during his working hours. I found them on Craigslist costing 15% of what they list for new and are in like new condition. I need them more for function than appearance. loading and unloading will spare my injury prone back (recovering from two compressed discs sustained from a fall last year) and have spinal arthritis. I did purchase concrete blocks to raise the freezers 4 1/2" today. Due to space and maneuvering concerns the washer and dry pedestal must be installed first and then the concrete block can be placed for the freezers. The smaller freezer will have to come out the room . Glad I have an appliance dolly to help too.

but if you don't know insurance companies, they will pro rate the age of the damaged machine, and settle for less than half the cost of a new one. Even if you have actual replacement cost clause, they will only replace with a comparable machine you had, or what it costs today.
