Leave it to Florida to once again raise stupidity to an artform. Anyone remember Anita Bryant?

How does the state determine sexual orientation of people who wish to adopt children? Do they ask on a form?

Why don't they just fire up the ovens and get it over with?

*tongue in cheek* no no no no a little higher, that's it..

oh for G-d's sake. I was raised by heteros and I survived that disgraceful awful sick twisted egotistical lifestyle.

But why the hell do they keep trying to convert and recruit me?

"Politically, I'm tolerant of the heterosexual lifestyle. But the actual act is rather revolting."

There are approximately 170,000 children in the foster-care system in this country that are awaiting adoption who quite likely won't be adopted into a permanent home because they are black, too old, handicapped or part of a sibling group of kids.

About twelve years ago, an acquaintance of mine here in town and his partner, a Lutheran minister and former (interim) head of our local AIDS project were called upon by the state to be foster parents to a young teenage boy that was picked up by police. He had been drifting from city to city for nearly a year, suffered from mild depression and quite naturally, a bit of paranoia toward authority. He had been supporting himself by turning tricks for a few dollars here and there. He had been beaten, stolen from, and generally driven to the brink of hopelessness by his life on the streets. My friend and his partner took him in, got him medical care and started to work on his troubled life and get him back into school. Three weeks later, he shot himself in their home with a gun he'd purchased for a few dollars on the street (another thread!). The public outrage at the tragic death of this young man was deafening. Because of privacy laws for minors, none of the boy's story was ever made public. Nobody knew that he was gay, he was homeless and turning tricks on the streets, living in doorways and in the open for many weeks. Nobody knew that in the course of his medical examinations he had been diagnosed HIV positive. The cries from the public were, as you might imagine, based solely on the fact that the foster home he had been placed in was a gay home. Demands for tougher laws against placing children in homes of gays were made daily in the papers and many an opinion letter to the local paper called for incarceration and worse for the two men who opened their home and hearts to a young person in desperate need. Their grief was overwhelming, made worse for obvious reasons and they spent many sleepless nights and many months of anguish.

Their story and the terrible consequences of their selfless actions gave me great trepidation during my decision to become a foster parent and subsequently adopting my son. Rather than shy away from the possibility of the bad, I focused on the good and the incredible need of so many orphaned children who are desperate for a stable family life and most importantly, love. In Nebraska, it is against the law for a gay COUPLE to become foster parents or adopt a child through the state system. The law says nothing about single gay individuals. I was investigated thoroughly and approved in 1997. Never once was I asked any questions about sexuality. I didn't believe that it mattered one bit to a child. They don't care about studies and statistics, they just want to be loved. Those who would deny this to anyone, especially children, are the most wicked and evil. I will be the first to admit there are many people who should never be parents, but for me, this all boils down to basic human rights and goes hand-in-hand with the "gay marriage" fight. If we are never recognized as human beings, equal with every other person on this earth, we still lose.

Ok, I'm confused. Since Nebraska doesn't recognize same-sex marriage, how do they define "gay couple"?

Everyone thinks Florida as south Florida, Ft.Lauderdale, Miami and South Beach. The captial is Tallahasse, where all the laws come from, which may has well be lower Alabama. The state has huge problems in represenation. There should be a North Florida and a South Florida, they are that different.

unfcukingbelievable

I am truly glad I don't live in Florida.

christianists will drive us into the gas chambers if we don't fight them.

They gained an important advantage against us on 4 November in many states. Partially, this was because of many among us who refuse to get up off off their lazy asses and do something to protect ourselves.

Partially because the tale of hatred and fear always sells, at least in the beginning.

Partially because some of us were foolish enough to believe "it can't happen here" and thusly voted against their own self-interest.

Well, it is happening here. We are no longer human in California, Arkansas and Florida are taking away our children...

If we do not act, and act decisively, they will reenact the horrors of Nazi Germany against us.

Jeff - it's a co-habitation thing. They have no problem with a single person becoming a foster parent, but not two people of the same sex living together.

That's a step in the right direction for Florida at least, and that's how mountains are moved; a little at a time, slowly but surely.

"may has well be lower Alabama"

or South Georgia, and that mentality extends well south into many parts of Florida----even south Florida. There are some 'sho 'nuff rednecks in Immokalee, Clewiston and even Homestead.
The "old Florida" mentality that existed before the 1970's is still alive and well in many parts of Florida-----although those old folks are dying off pretty rapidly now. Of course, there are plenty of rednecks from other parts of the nation retiring there to take the places of those who have passed on.Most of them settle in the smaller communities as they cannot afford to live in areas such as Miami Beach and would feel out of place there anyway. When I worked in Vero Beach (aka "Zero Beach") in 2002-2003 I was amazed at how redneck it was as well as the surounding areas. Lawdy.

I spent a lot of time in and around the Tampa area in the 1970's and especially the 1980's and it was redneck as hell----even in the city of Tampa. The suburbs around Tampa were even worse. Riverview, Brandon, etc. Redneck as HELL honey! Just like South Georgia or L.A.

Greg is right about moving the mountains slowly. I just think it will be even slower in Florida because of the near constant influx of 'ignunt, backwoods people from other areas of the country looking to escape the cold and associated expenses. Just another opinion based on my experiences. My family were some old Florida pioneers----I had relatives there as early as the 1920's, so Florida has always been a part of my life, especially when I was young.

I can remember in my childhood back in the 1950's, South Florida was still highly segregated. We would drive down Collins Ave. in Miami Beach and stare at the large signs in or on the major resort hotels proclaiming:
NO COLORED
NO CATHOLICS
NO JEWS
NO DOGS

My father always tried to humor us by dryly commenting: "I wonder what the dogs ever did to 'em?!)My mother was NOT amused.
