Fluorescent lamps

I found some GE Ecolux lamps to fit my dryer but not my washer. They come in several styles including Cool White and Chroma 50. I bought the Chroma 50 for the dryer this spring and this fall when I bought the Cool White lamp to go into the washer I discovered the color difference when I put them side by side.

It's too bad because the Chroma 50 is a really nice lamp. The info printed on the Chroma 50 package recommended the lamp be used for laundry and task areas. The color temp. was rated at 5000K and I forget the candle power, but the Chroma 50 seems to reproduce a bright sunlight look. It had more of a blue look than the regular Cool White.

I'll post some pictures but the difference is even more dramatic in person. I wonder if I looked around I could find the Chroma 50 that would fit my washer? I think it's a F15. The first picture is the Chroma 50 and the second is the Cool White. Have any of you noticed the difference when looking at fluorescent lamps before? I looked through the gelighting.com site but I can't seem to find anything. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.[this post was last edited: 11/7/2014-01:48]

I didn't see too much difference between the two photos, I'd bet that the auto color balance in your camera leveled out the differences. If you can set the camera to manual color balance and shoot both the photos that way, then the camera doesn't try to adjust to "normal". This is a lot more like how your eye perceives the light.

I usually set my camera to a fixed 3000k white balance when comparing lighting. I also try to lock the exposure settings too so that relative brightness is recorded also.

There are big differences in the color of florescent and LED lights, it pays to pay attention and pick what you like. For lamps behind vintage plastic diffuser panels which may have yellowed a bit, the higher color temps may look better.

These lamps are behind frosted glass. No yellowing. Look at the color difference at the end of the panel and the reflection off the porcelain. My monitor shows the difference.

Florescent Lamps For TOL Maytag's

Hi Brain, hope you can find two matched lamps. While you are going to this much trouble why not install longer lamps on the washer and dryer, I always hated how Maytag cheaped out and put such short lamps in their TOL machines.

When I restored the CA900 and CDE750 all push-button pair the other year I put longer lamps in both machines and it looks a lot better.

Fluorescent lamps come in a wide range of colors.  From 2700, to 3000, to 3500 on to 5000 and 6500.  The higher the number the bluer the light.  Some people perceive the cooler lights as brighter, they are not, but folks think so.  Personally I dislike anything over 3000k, to me they look cold and uninviting, but to each his own.

 

With some hunting you should be able to find a match the the Chroma 50 you bought earlier.

And if you thought Maytags were underendowed, light-wise, you should see the short tubes KitchenAid put over the controls in their early electronic models.

I like the cool white, always have. You can buy a GE "Daylight" today in a F15 and they have a blueish hue to them, you can find them usually at Wallmarts around here.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I did find some daylight bulbs (6500 K) in the F15 at Lowes. The Ace where I bought my Chroma 50, known as warm daylight are not as common. The daylight bulbs do light up the whole panel better but they're awfully bright. Almost garish and are blue colored. It remains to be seen if I stick with them or not. The Chroma 50 was just right, lit up the whole panel and wasn't so bright, but I would have to get someone to order me a Chroma 50 in F15 if I want to go with it. I'll try it for awhile and see how it fits. These are my new darlings and I want them to be just right. I'll be posting about them after the Holidays.

but me personally, i think i prefer the dimmer looking light.
