anyone see the clip of the 70s movie airport on you tube. I loved the movie and the book. At my Grandpas house I remeber an artical about how they made the movie in Tv guide. Im wondering if anyone in the club collects old tv guides and has a copy (of the article) they would be willing to send me.

Anyone else care to comment on the movie?

I think Sdlee was referring to the original Airport movie, 1970. It was made based on the book Airport.

I think you are thinking of the movie Airplane. Which was a huge farce, very funny. And don't call me Surely.

"Airport", dear Toggle, not "Airplane".

"Airport" had a cast of thousands: Dean Martin as the swingin' Captain Demerest, Helen Hayes as the stowaway, Jean Seberg as the intuitive gate agent, Jacqueline Bisset (Hot cha cha!) as the stewardess with an "extra passenger" - all filmed with what has to be the ugliest airline color scheme ever (lime green, Gold and Grey, as I recall)

That was also the movie that got me started in Aviation!
Ny first experience with the original movie was that a few freinds and I flew to MSP to see the Minnesota Northstars play the Chicago Blackhawks at the old stadium that sat where the parking lot for the mall of America is. When we got off the plane from Chicago we didn't walk thru the jetways into the terminal, but we had to walk on the ground level thru the baggage sorting area to get to the place where you pick up your bags. At the escillators going up to the ticketing level were these flashing red lights and a sign on each one saying "Hot Set". Well, it turns out that they were filming the interior scenes at MSP that night. There was a sign in the area saying that if you want to be an extra in the movie, please show up at 1am and filming will run until 5am. At the time we were more interested in the hockey game. But MSP was supposed to represent ORD but the City of Chicago wouldn't let the movie company shut down one of the terminals for a few days like MSP did.
And it was COLD that night too!
Every once in a while when I am heading out to a gate at MSP I think about the movie being filmed there. I think, hmm this used to be the red concourse or this used to be the green concourse. I've worked out of them all at one time or another. I guess it's an aviation thing.

"You mean THE STEWARDESS IS FLYING THE PLANE??!!"

Whoopsie. That might be from Airport '75. Anyone know? It's a great quote.

Personally, I like Airplane better. "You mean we have to blow Rock?"

veg

Airport '75 is correct!

At least I think it's correct. Who can forget the fine acting of Karen Black as the stewardess forced to step in for the pilot who decided to take a walk out the window?

Then there was one where the airplane went underwater and somebody (Roddy McDowell?) got crushed by a high-fi

Ah, the memories....

"Fly ME" in "airline parlance" referes to the very popular and successful advertising campaign used by (the unfortunately now defunct) National Airlines. The commercials always began with the pretty stewardess standing at the door of the aircraft announcing "I'm Linda" (or whatever)"Fly Me"!

The aircraft were all painted with a woman's name next to the top corner of front entrance to the aircraft. (L1/R1).

Steve:

And let's not forget the "Hi, I'm Linda and I'm going to fly you like you have never been flown before!" part of the Fly Me campaign. Very popular. But I think that later on one of the FA's from National (which was later bought up by Pan Am) became the president of NOW (National Organization of Women, a feminist organization). National took a lot of heat for that campaign. But it was fun and a lot of people took it in jest. But in today's PC world, you couldn't do something like that.
Long live the Sun King!

Whirlcool, I remember that campaign. Wasn't it the FA union that got upset? NOW would go along, of course, but I thought it was the FA union that stirred the pot. As I recall, they were also the force behind the more "professional" uniforms, and elimination of the age and marriage rules.

Although, from looking at this picture, the uniforms back then weren't all that provacative. Maybe slightly higher hemlines, and more hats, of course, but pretty conventional.

Its ok toggles, I forgive you. As a parody I LOVED aiplane too

But the memories of Airport, the one that started it all.

Hey was it all filmed in MSP coz some of the outside sceene destinctly look like LAX ...lol complete with snow

It was indeed a cast, Dean Martin wow the epitome of deboniere I wonder if he thought he could do the role

Jaqueline Bisset, she could make a gay man straight. EVen when I watch it after all these years. Talk about classy

come to think of it the whole cast was hot.And still are.

what agreat story, there isnt one part of it that dosent interlink all these people who come to be on the plane at the same time. Hard to find writing like that anymore., Thanks to all who wrote

All the terminal, ticket desk, insurance desks, and outside ground ops of the Boeing 707 scenes were all filmed at MSP during the week of Feb 14, 1969. The Trans Global ticket counter was actually in a empty space next to the exit that leads to the passenger drop off ramp right across from our ticket counter instead of in one of the concourses. Also at the end of the movie where the pilots are looking at the damage to the plane on the outside, that was taken in one of the old Northwest hangars. All the other scenes were filmed in Hollywood.
In the opening scene, there is one extremely brief shot of people by their cars in the snow covered parking lot. That shot was taken at ORD. Where that lot was is now a multilevel parking garage. There are numerous references to Chicago in the movie. For instance when Joe Patroni gets stuck in traffic, he gets stuck on Manheim Rd, which runs right next to ORD (Chicago O'Hare).
My favorite person in the movie was Dana Wynter. I thought she played the "rich bitch" to the hilt. Did anyone know that she is a German actress? I never would have guessed.

When I saw that movie, my mind was made up. I was going to follow in my fathers footsteps and become a pilot.
That movie was very well researched. No real major technical mistakes. On takeoff and final approach the cockpit conversation was amazingly real, however abbreviated. I always wanted to fly a 707, but they were already retired from service by the time I had enough experience and seniority to do so.

whirlcool your cool

Thanks for all the great info on one of my faves. I was just a little kid when this thing came out but it sparked my intrest in Aviation too. But I didnt go into it as you have.

at the risk of going off topic on this off topic I had a bitter old math teacher convince me Id never fly with my poor eye sight and deplorable math skills. Too bad I was too young to understand that she just didnt want to spend the extra effort to get me up to par. But if anyone wants to start a seperate thread on ways old school systems and old school teachers werent always the best Ill gladly participate.

But back to the skies.Im glad to hear the research was so good and authentic. I imagine a lot of that is directly related to Alexs writing. I remember the book being exactly like the movie.

Yeah I remember Burt Landcasters wife in the movie. I didnt think she was that much of a bitch. SHe sure knew what she wanted but it seemed she was very fair when the end came down
I quote " and youll always be able to see the children, I promiss you there wont be any trouble there"... hey todays divorceing people ......take notice.

she even gives him a last chance before she tells him there is somone else

the story is just incredible, there is no one that isnt somehow connected Even the gate agent has a niece on the flight. Superb. Anyway since you know dates and all that do you have anything youre willing to share in the form of articles in magazines and what not? feb 14th 69you say?

As I said before I know there was an article in TV guide witha cut out of the plane and the passengers sitting in it and the article had to do with out they were making it look real. Wish Id asked Grandpa for it but ironicly Id probably have gone down in a plane before I would have asked. Believe it or not I was that shy then.

Whirlcool----

There is a scene in the movie near the ticket counters where Don Nyrop's Secretary, Marie Bloomquist does a little cameo appearance. She loved her moment in the sun---another unsung hero of NW's past.

You are right---the Seven-Oh stuff was great. I really miss those birds. I can still hear those Pratts singing.

The novel "Airport" by Arthur Hailey, is very good. All of his book (Hotel, Wheels, Overload) are. Very well-researched and entertaining.

The movie version of "Hotel" is entertaining, although I hated the ending. The book was much better.

My first ever flight in a jet was a 707 when mom took me and my sister to England back in 1967. I was 11 y.o at the time and the airline was BOAC from Toronto to London. It was so exciting as was the whole trip. I still have the little Junior Jet club log book they gave to me on the flight and the lapel pin that went along with it. It looks like a little passport, well made, and has a b/w picture of the 707 inside as well as it being signed by the pilot of that particular flight.
The other major major highlight of that trip for me and it wasn't planned, mom says how everything just happened to fall into place, was that when we left London to head up to Newcastle to my grans by train, it was aboard the Flying Scotsman. To me that was even more exciting than the flight because I was an even bigger train fan, still am.

Here's one of quite a few YouTubes on Buffalo Airways in Yellowknife NWT Canada still flying DC3's and Curtiss Commandos. I've been fortunate as well to have had one flight on a DC3, a Constellation, a sea plane unknown and the one flight I will never forget because it was for my 5th birthday and a total surprise, my dad took me to see a helicopter that happened to be in town I guess and then we went for a ride in it.. It was one of those 2 seater bubble type army copters. They were using a bit of land in front of the Holiday or Guildwood inn here in town and everytime I drive by that place I still remember that day as if it was yesterday not 46 years ago.
