Airport.....

Was the first "grownups" movie i saw as a kid. We were visiting relatives in Little Rock and Uncle Ralph took us all out to the movie Airport. I loved that movie!

Peter:

Those BOAC Rolls Royce 707's were certainly fantastic aircraft. Those engines really screamed when taking off. BOAC flew them ORD-LHR back during the late 60's. I remember seeing them when I used to spend afternoons at the airport dreaming of the future....
I am positive that they rattled houses all along their takeoff path. But with that Navy Blue, Silver and Gold livery, they were very beautiful aircraft.

SDLee:

BTW, the 707 used in the movie Airport later crashed on final approach into Sao Paulo several years later killing the crew.
Another thing I had heard from an old pilot was that in the scene when the 707 is making it's emergency landing almost turned into an accident. In the book the plane lands safely, but when they filmed the scene of the 707 skidding down the runway and the plane starts turning to the left, the plane being filmed was actually skidding itself and almost wiped out the crew filming the movie! So they rewrote the script to accomodate that great footage!
Since the plane was leased from Flying Tigers, Flying Tigers supplied the flight crews for the flying scenes.

The only article I have read about the movie Airport was the same TV Guide article you mentioned in your post. Most airlines have mock ups of aircraft like that for their F/A training programs. Only the ones that are really used are fully enclosed rather than having a side missing so the camera can get the shots. Also most training simulators can be filled up with fake smoke to simulate reduced visibility. They can also light up certain windows and doors to simulate fires outside the aircraft.

Oh and the other jet returning from England on that trip was a BOAC Vickers VC-10. That was exciting as well. The RAF was still using them may still, at least up until a couple of years ago when I was in Calgary when once a week or so one would take off and you could hear it thundering like crazy as it lifted. Not like todays subdued whining. Theres a British Army training base out about 100 mi east of Calgary out in the bald ass prairie.

Mr Whirl cool

Again thanks. I know just by what you describe that you saw the same TV guide I did. I was up the other night trying to find it on E bay. Im amazed as to what they have for sale along the TV guides. Most intresting. But it was late and I was tired.

IF we ever meet at some wash in or something light years away plan to have your conversation dominated by this movie and all things avaiation, tho I wasnt able to pursue it it still holds an unbelieveable facination for me.Im still in awe that they can even get one of those things in the air. Yeah yeah I know the science behind it.Im also one of those nuts who would never complain that my house is on the run way path but would relish such a plaessure. While the other home owners are at city council meetings Id be installying skyites.

PS as a person whose been know to fly in and out of MSP maybe Ill be on one of your flights. In this day of post 911 is it even legal to ask who your pilot is now?

Yes, you can ask the names of the flight crews. However, at the beginning of the flight the flight attendants usually announce our names. And if you are on one of my flights, you can even visit the flight deck after the flight terminates at its destination.
