For anyone who likes the electronic control panel featured in todays POD, here is a shot of what the technology evolved into.The Whirlpool LA9800XTN. This is a 1993 Model.

Very neat! While I've seen the Kenmore version, I never realized Whirlpool made an electronic-control DD machine. How long were these produced?
On another subject, I was watching the Convention DVD when Jason opened up an early Design 2000. Inside was a winged DD Surgilator if you can believe that...it had 4 wings as opposed to the 3 on the BD version, and had very strange post vanes as well.

Austin, that was the "Double-Duty Surgilator" that was on Whirlpool's first Design 2000 DD machine. Granny's Design 2000 had it.

WOW!! I never saw a dd Whirlpool of this recent vintage with electronic contols either.

Thanks for the pics! I lost track of Whirlpool's line-up sometime in the early 1980s. This helps fill the gap.
Man-oh-Man, I thought that the electronic control panels was only on the belt drive machines, and this is proof for me to see that they extended to the DD line of machines.

WOW! I used to own one of these. It was none too easy on clothes, and the direct drive transmission used to slip past neutral drain and spin the tub full of water on every first load of the day. Even a new tranny didn't solve that problem. I kept it for quite some time, but in 1997, the electronic control panel failed (third time since I bought it) and Whirlpool had discontinued support for the machine. That's when I bought my Frigidaire Gallery FL set.

Whirlpool Problems
I guess I can consider myself very fortunate that I haven't had not one problem with the controls yet. But people keep asking what kid of problems have developed yet, and I have to say none.
I did recently overhaul the agitator internals, the dogs for the top part of the agitator wore down, so those only needed replacing, but since I ordered the entire internal agitator kit, I replaced the seal, thrust bearing, etc. The machine runs and agitates like new now.
That agitator does churn a bit of water, but I think the clothes get a good cleaning. I haven't noticed any abnormal wear to my clothes, but they don't really get that dirty. My clothes usually end up smelling like jet fuel rather than having dirt on them.
In fact today we didn't feel like running down to our local coin op to wash our Queen Size comforter, so we fit it into this Whirlpool and believe it or not, it did a remarkable job of turning it over in the water.

Cool washer!! I love the controls - so logically laid out, but I have one question. Does it have a warm wash? I didn't see a warm wash button... I guess you have to combine the hot and cold buttons to get a warm wash?
BTW, I think I've seen an electronic control Whirlpool DD recently on their website, and it wasn't the Calypso machine either. I think it was called the Catalyst or something along those lines??

Jon, it does a warm wash / cold rinse by default, so buttons are needed only for Hot or Cold wash, or Warm rinse.

Another neat thing this washer does is as it's draining out the water you can see the water level dropping on the water level selector indicator. The same when it's filling, you can see the lights working their way towards the selected water level.
The washer beeps 5 times when it's done, the dryer beeps 5 times when its done.
The control panel is logical, just start at the left and work your way to the right. But I think most washers are like that anyway, aren't they?

This, and the matching dryer, were well thought out and designed. Mine didn't have the dual action, 4 paddle agitator that the later ones did. Mine had 5 S-shaped vanes at the top that metamorphasized into 5 paddles at the bottom. This may be why it was a bit harsh on some fabrics. But I loved the washer and dryer overall. I thought that the electronic panels were laid out very logically and intuitively. Much better than the LK electronic panels at the time. I loved the set and was saddened when the electronics again went out after its 10th year with me. The cost to replace them was prohibitive, and WP call in customer service and support at the time could only be described as being downright rude and anal about making an exception, because my electronics were three months past their 10-year warranty.

I haven't had to call Whirlpool about anything with this set yet, and I am sure at 12 years old it would be on their "unsupported" listing. I DID see one of these electronic control boards for this washer on a parts website for about $50.00.
Gosh, three months after 10 years, I hate when that happens! Like the computer that burns up two weeks after the warranty expires!

I did end up taking the supervisor. The CSR was rude, his supervisor was just plain abusive. One of my faults is that I don't have a demanding, angry demeanor. I did ask about hidden warranties, or for some special consideration. I was informed the the model had been discontinued for some time and that "all warranty policies are in place and will be followed." The symptom was that the washer randomly turned off in mid cycle. By the way, the price quote on the part without the labor was $248.00 per board and they suggested replacing both relay boards because the malfunction could be in either of them. I have to say that in all the years of my purchasing, the only time I have been treated with less respect and consideration by a customer service person, was with Farmer's Insurance, and that's pretty bad.

Wow, that was pretty bad service on Whirlpool's part. I guess I've been pretty fortunate with my set. Hopefully, it will last a few years longer. As long as the tub doesn't rust, and I can troubleshoot things and find parts, I hope I can keep mine running. Thanks for sharing.
