FOUND AN OLD MAYTAG DISHWASHER!!!!

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That's my first dishwasher . . .

. . . I'd say around 1972. It cleaned like a champ, but required ear plugs in order to remain in the same house when it was running.

The sump area with the Figure 8 cover was a bad design. Mine began leaking. The repairman said it had rusted through. I was mad. Told him that material didn't rust. He said it was a problem and that Maytag offered a kit with which to repair it or they would "deal" on a new dishwasher.

I chose a new dishwasher which was another reverse-load model, but the sump area had been redesigned and worked for many years with no problem . . . except for the noise.

Beautiful Find

You will absolutely love that dishwasher.  The reverse rack Maytag was a very clever and well thought out design to make sure the jets of water hit the soiled surfaces in the most effective way possible.

My first boyfriend had the TOL Maytag reverse rack - it was the next generation with the redesinged sump.  It was all electro-mechanical push button control.  One of the most beautiful machines I have ever seen.  I probably should have stayed with him just for that.  It was loud, but a beautiful loud (kinda like the B-52's at full volume).

Enjoy - and congratulations!

This model (in white)

was our first dishwasher, and so far, the best dishwasher I have ever had.

EVER.

Yes, loud. Could hear it all over the first floor of the house.

However, everything came clean the first time. No yibbles in the dents of glasses or cups. I still prefer reverse racking. I think this is a great machine for heavier dinnerware, such as Fiesta, or Franciscan "Starburst."

We NEVER, EVER carved meat on the top......impossible to sanitize board. We just used it as a staging area for unloading.

Ours ran with only two MINOR repairs from 1973-1994.

It will need water hotter than 120F to run really well, however.

I strongly suggest a dose of Finish Dishwasher Cleaner.

I am emerald with envy.

Best of luck-

Neat Orignal MT RR Portable DW

These were in some ways better than the later MT BD machines but were very difficult to repair when built in. This DW like later MTs and all KAs 15-23 and most WPs uses the same main water seal, I buy them from MT by the bag full. Your machine also has the later GE main motor The earlier version had a GM built Delco motor Good Luck with it, If you want to call me and I can point out the various areas of possible problems.

Maytag DW

I would like to find one of these earlier machines as well. What years were this style with the buttons in production?

You really find the bargains, Man! Congrats.

Great Maytag continuity of design--the way the buttons resemble those on the washers. Perfect close-up.

These older Maytags, the conventionals, the automatics, the DW's are so steady, sure, and confident--never say die. I love them, and their low rumble of power.

Pete, when you say this machine, once restored, will go into storage, I was wondering what your long range plans are. Are you going to have a museum-like display some day, like John and Ted are planning, or will there be a big sell-off? You have so many amazing machines.

The classy spotless Italian restaurant I worked at, Minillo's of Cleveland, butchered its own meat on a wooden block just like the one on your Maytag, and then, after a good scrubbing, it was disinfected with Clorox. Never had any health/germ/food poisoning issues.

Great find, Pete!  The Harvest Gold finish brings back lots of memories!!

I always liked the control panel the way the dial was set into the door of these models.   Hope you have lots of fun with it and if you ever need spare racks or a cutlery basket (new blue ones, though), I have 'em and I need to make some room in the garage....

thanks for all the comments!

this must be a popular machine here! i had a hunch it was worth driving 2 hours to pick up and bring back! and for 20 bucks!

loved the "rant" appliance guy, i can do those quite well myself! i figured it was un p.c. due that it was a "real" wood top. i work at home depot and i see what we sell for wood these days!

combo, did you mean that i can use the same seal on this maytag as i could on any kitchenaid from 15-23? great!

thanks to all for the tips on preserving the top. i may keep this one in the kitchen for awhile and use it since everyone says it is such a great machine. i have 8 of my favorite machines in the kitchen, from g.e. mobile maid to kitchenaid kd2-p but maybe i'll move one out. i am not a meat cutter type so i would never use that chopping block for meat but it sure looks pretty and so nostalgic. and i agree, the harvest gold is great!

what will i do the machines in the long run? i say i am done collecting but then i keep adding on. i will probably have to thin out my kitchenaid collection a bit and if i "croak" for some reason i have instructed my best friend to get ahold of automaticwasher.org and everything will be given away! what a funeral!!!! "come and get em"!!!!

and the top mount

i have another question please.

why is it called a reverse rack? is it because the top rack is so deep in height that plates can be put in it as well as in the bottom? are plates normally loaded in the top on these maytags?

gonna try to get this one water tested sometime this weekend. am very curious as to how it runs. you guys have given so many "thumbs up" comments i can't wait to try it out!

thanks!

Why is it called a reverse rack?

Because it's loaded "in reverse" of what you would normally do.

I.E.... plates and silver in the top rack (leaning back instead of forward) and glasses, cups, bowls, pots, etc in the bottom rack.

So this IS your first Maytag DW Pete?   YAY!

FYI... in fact after seeing your post for this DW, I (foolishly) went to that evil Craigs list and searched for Maytag dishwashers.   Found an older built in for $75 and a newer (but still reverse rack) portable for $40.   The Maytag gene runs strong in my veins, so I drove to Santa Monica last night to pick it up and now I have one too!   What the hell do I need with ANOTHER dishwasher?!?!  UGH!   LOL

@revvinkevin

Can you really have too many RR Maytags?

I had the same model, but avocado. But mine had the big filter module in the center below the bottom rack.

You load it like this.

Large dinner plates on both sides of the silverware basket, in the Upper Rack.
Smaller plates and cereal or salad bowls in the back half of the upper rack.
You can put cookie sheets on each side of the upper rack, in the section that is lower than the rest of the rack.

Glasses in the lower rack. The taller glasses fit well in the front center part of the bottom rack. Cups or mugs on either side of the back of the lower rack. You can use the fold down shelves to put two rows of cups.
Mixing bowls and pots fit well in the lower rack, but you can also put them in the upper one.

and also, regarding the door latch.

if you push it to the right, the door is unlocked. If you put it in the middle, as on your picture, the door is locked but the machine if off ( ideal, when you are moving the machine around). When you push it completely to the left, the machine turns on. You don't see the latch in that position, it is completely hidden.

Can you really have too many RR Maytags?

Hmm, good question.   However at this moment, one is more then enough as I have 3 other dishwashers (all KA's) and that's too many!   LOL

Though I am looking forward to playing with this one, then getting it up in the kitchen to see how it does.

this is my first old maytag

i think i have every brand except a westinghouse and am always on the lookout for one of those.

i have another maytag but it has a plastic tub and is not belt driven. direct vertical mount pump/motor. it's a maytag jet clean. i assume from the 80's or possibly 90's. i keep it in storage as i hate to pitch it but i don't consider it anything really worthwhile. and if i remember the top rack is not deep enough for plates and the silverware is on the bottom.

congrats on your's also kevin! craigs list is where i found this one and most of l my others too! e bay is great too at times.

thanks for the info on the door latch, white tub. i haven't plugged it in yet so i have no idea what it is like electrically. hopefullt in a couple days here.

" so I drove to Santa Monica last night to pick it up and now I have one too"

oh, oh-O, you got it bad.

But it sounds like FUN !  so...

Just don't be afraid to ask for help, if the time comes.

Appliance collectors rehab is an easy, 3 week program.

(for the seriously disturbed there is inpatient and shock therapy.  But,  but, but, we won't get into that right now).

When you start thinking of buying another house, just to house them all,

yeah, it might be time to consider your plight.  Giving them names, don't get me started...

The top spray arm . . .

. . . is one of the best. And Maytag thought to recess in the ceiling so that when you're loading the top rack, the arm doesn't get in the way of tall items.

The tines at the rear of the top rack are wider and perfect for bowls. You could really load a BUNCH of stuff in those machines.

And because of the good ceiling wash arm, I NEVER had any bits of anything left on the dishes after it was finished with a load.

However, I did have a problem with cookie sheets and broiler pans. They were just too big. KA beats Maytag on that point.

Good luck - and have fun.

finishing up here!

i was able to work on this maytag and water test it tonite! it runs great and doesn't leak!

the woman said the problem was the faucet hookup but it was really the fill valve.
it was completely clogged and no water would enter. i took it all apart, cleaned it and gave it some new screws! put it back on and it works fine!

here it is back in but not screwed down to frame yet.

cleaned up all the area

underneath with wd 40 and tightened a couple clamps just a bit. motor and pump are tucked way in back and a bottom plate stopped me from being able to get to them.

one problem it does have

i just found out is the overflow switch is not working. i am running it thru a cycle now and on the final rinse the fill time was 3 min. 10 sec!

tub is too full of water and it is leaking a bit on the sides.

gonna adjust this tomorrow and try it again.

one more view

showing hoses and plastic hose ports. hoses are in great shape and wd-40 always helps lubricate them and shine them up!

i use it on all hoses on all my dishwashers and washers!
