There are those people who are constantly trolling the "FREE" section of CL looking for free machines like this, at least here in the LA area.  

 

They ONLY care about it's scrap value, nothing more.

Out of curiosity what is the scrap value of a washer or dryer these days? With the cost of fuel these days its hard to believe its worth the trip to pick it up and scrap it, saying nothing of the persons time.

A few years ago we took delivery of a new mid-size CNC lathe here at work. It came on a big welded steel skid that may have weighed 300 pounds or so. I know when our shop scraps steel we get about 1 cent per pound. So I put a free ad on Craigslist for this pallet and it was gone in 15 minutes, guy said he would scrap it. Hard to believe it pays for the gas used, maybe scrappers are bad at math...

I took in 6 washers and dryers last week to the scrapyard. They paid me about $78.00 for the load, not bad considering I had about $15.00 in everything. Heavy stoves and refrigerators bring more.
