Since I was messing with my fridge (see Other thread...) I decided it was time to replace my water filter. I bought 3 or 4 a few years back when my local Meijers closed, cheap. Anyway it's a PUR filter for my WP SxS. On the box it indicates it removes lead and mercury, looking on line none of the new filters show that. Is it just a false claim, or have they changed the filters?

I see all kinds of filters on line, no idea of the quality. I'd be hard pressed to pay $49 for a WP branded filter when I can get a 3 pack from AMazon for $24. I still have one new in the box, so I'm good for a while, though I put the date on the filter and the one I replaced as from 6/13/16 so a bit over due...

looking at this one on Amazon it indicates it does reduce lead and many other things, it's rated NSF/ANSI 53, which I gather is a higher standard then 42.

Has WP perhaps outsourced their filters? The last couple I bought at Lowe's for our 2009 KA SxS were both a different brand and part number, so as of last month I'm on the third iteration/manufacturer of this filter. I've decided not to save the ever-changing part number off the boxes anymore because it's worthless. They don't even provide a cross reference for other possible part numbers. I'll just bring the old filter with me to the store in about a year or so.

Maybe an appliance parts retailer would still carry genuine WP filters if they still make them?

I haven't bothered to read what all gets filtered. As long as the chlorine taste and smell is gone, I'm happy.

Samsung SmartHub

I changed the one in my Samsung last week. The screen popped up telling me it was due for change. I asked me if I wanted to order the filter...I hit yes and filter arrived a few days later. The box said it does remove Mercury, lead and "other impurities". Not sure if the other brands still do it.

WP website says the filter for my fridge removes 66 contaminants. My filter is different than yours though. Sometimes I just order generic ones on ebay for much less money. Other times I find genuine WP Everydrop filters for a good price on ebay, like the one in the link below I just bought for $18.50 on ebay instead of $49 from WP. I think the last genuine WP one I bought was made in Mexico.

I came across this article online, helps clarify the difference between the standards.

NSF/ANSI Standard 42

The commonly tested chemical reduction claims for products seeking certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 42 are: chlorine (taste and odor), chloramines, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, pH neutralization and zinc reduction.

NSF/ANSI Standard 53

The commonly tested chemical reduction claims for products seeking certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 are: heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury and selenium), inorganics (fluoride and nitrate plus nitrite) and volatile organic chemicals (chloroform surrogate as well as individual organic chemicals).

So personally I want a filter that adherers to both standards...
