Hi everyone, I have a 1-18 machine that has a badly chipped pulsator cone. The model is WC-7 (pics below).

I have a replacement cone assembly, but I cannot get the agitator mounting nut off. It is frozen on. Is there some special way to do this? I found a post where the individual used a vice-grip at the lowest point of the agitator shaft to hold it in place while he turned the nut from the top. Is that a safe way to do it (w/out damaging the shaft)? Any other recommendations?

If I end up having to cut it off are these mounting nuts easy to find? I searched eBay with no luck. Does anyone here have an extra mounting nut they would sell me?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Removing a Frigidaire agitator

Hi, I assume you have a replacement agitator if so, just cut the old agitator out by breaking it to pieces cutting, etc.

When you get down to the aluminum mowing nut heat it with a torch and it will come off easily.

If you want to save the agitator, I’ve always been able to get them off by turning a propane torch to a very low flame, and holding it in the middle of the agitator and heating the aluminum nut Until it just starts to smoke a bit.

Then it will unscrew easily without damaging anything in the mechanism I’ve had to do this many times over the years, both of the solid tub and the 118 machines.

Hi John,

Thanks for that info. I do have an extra agitator column so I can definitely sacrifice the one that's currently in there. I wasn't sure if heating the nut would damage the bellows (or anything else) below. I've never serviced a 1-18 before; this should be fun! Haven't used a torch in a while! :)
