Frigidaire 1-18 Timer

As of this evening my beloved Frigdaire 1-18 has stopped advancing the timer. The timer motor runs however. This happened during the final spin cycle. I noticed that the knob seemed slightly harder to pull out when I started the wash cycle, but it stepped through the entire cycle up to that point. I have not tried any of the other cycles on the machine. All seems to be working fine and even the cycles are accurate as the time is advanced by hand. Bottom line, I need some help for those of you who know about these types of things.

Will need a model number...sounds like you need a new timer.

You're gonna have to take the timer out and carefully take it apart to see what is wrong with it. Usually they can be fixed if you have another similar timer for parts.

COLDSPOT66, here are my model numbers. Washer is a W3T-2 I'm assuming it's 1972. Timer is a Kingston Model 60 Another number stamped on the timer is 0535A5 95 2231

Robert, Thank you ever so much for the information. I have never worked on anything like this before. What I considered doing was contacting Dave's Repair to see if I could pay him to fix it for me once I remove it. I also found another company online but said they would need the model number and at that time I had not removed the access panel to the timer. Just FYI, I contacted Reeco in Florida and they no longer work on anything that is not commercial or business related. In the end I may wind up trying to fix it myself, but I gotta admit it makes me nervous. I love that washer, and I can't stand the thoughts of messing up anything about it.

If we can determine what the part number is for your timer, I'll be glad to try to help you fix it. I have taken apart and repaired a number of Kenmore timers, so if yours is constructed anything like they are, I should be able to fix it.

The fact that, as you said, it is now harder to turn or pull in and out is sign that something is going bad. If we can find a parts donor timer, I am pretty confident that it can be spliced into a good working timer. I have seen a number of vintage Frig. parts on ebay recently so it may be that we can run across a NOS timer as well provided you can wait a little while.

Culprit Located...

I'm glad to report after a little investigation and help from Mark (aka) LightedControls that the timer is fine. It is the timer motor that needs to be replaced... So if anyone has a Kingston Model 60 (120 vac 3w 1rpm r 60hz) that I can purchase please let me know. Thank you all so much for your help and advice.

What kind of drive connection does the motor have? Kingston timer motors used a 11 tooth gear or an eccentric pin. You can still get both style motors from a Maytag parts dealer. The gear drive motor is part # 204663 and the pin drive is # 22205033.

I'm not really sure, but I'd have to say it is proabably a gear drive based on the way the motor sounds. The motor still runs, but just does not turn. I have agreed to purchase a used timer from a person who has one, and have located NOS timers complete with motor. I'm going to remove the motor from the used one that I have agreed to purchase and later on I will purchase a new one while they are still available. Thank you for the information

Fixed...

Today my new timer motor arrived and now everything is working perfectly again. A big thanks to all of you who helped me by providing information. I was able to purchase the new one from appliancepartscompany.com For those of you who have a timer motor with the same specifications as mine (listed above) you are free to email me and I will provide you with current part numbers and any other information you need.

During the process I have leared that...

This type motor is the "eccentric pin" variety
New motors are still readily available
I think the initial problem came from the timer needing to be lubricated which Mark told me how to do.
Dave's repair also can fix these timer motors replacing the plastic gear which is what usually fails with a brass one. So never toss one out
