Frigidaire Built-ins...

For some time, I've been interested in Built-in cooking appliances. I have no place to install them but I have to get them anyway! 

 

The first one I got is a slide-in 1968 Compact 30 range that was given to me by a member here. I wish to use it someday! I think this one has the most chances being used in the near future as it's self-cleaning! In addition to the Self-cleaning oven, this one also has the Heat Minder and Speed Heat.

 

 

Then I got a 1963-64 double wall oven and cooktop with the Heat Minder Turquoise, 

Then another turquoise wall oven from 1958-59 (I wish I had the vent hood that used to be with it but I didn't get that). 

 

Then I got a harvest gold cooktop and a self-cleaning double wall oven, one of the only two Self-Cleaning models GM-Frigidaire made in Canada (the other being the single wall oven version of this). I did get the stainless Nutone vent hood with this one!

 

More recently, I got a late-1950s Imperial wall oven in Aztek Copper along with a cooktop.

Very nice appliances. These were back when the Frigidaire name meant something. Ever since WCI took over the brand has not been looked at in the same way.

I never had a WCI/Electrolux appliance...

 

Oh, yes I did once. Someone gave me a Kelvinator or a White-Westinghouse refrigerator that I gave back to someone else just a few days after!

Our neighbors across the street had a stainless Frigidaire range like the first one pictured. They built their house in 1969 and haven't moved...it may still be in service.

I hope you can find some way to put these in use, Phil. I'd love to have a mid century modern home with turquoise appliances.

Are French Doors really Portes Francais in French? Very nice collection there.

Portes Françaises

Yes that's what we say here too!

 

"Françaises" with "es" at the end as "portes" is a feminine noun and always plural in this case! Everything in French is either feminine or masculine. Sometimes, two words referring to the same thing could be masculine or feminine so it's not really the object that has the genre but the name that refers to it!

 

But "Françaises" refers to France, not to French-Canada! And I don't know if the French people (from France I mean!) say that! 

One thing we don't say here is "French Fries". That, I've never heard in French!

In Québec, we either say "patates frites" (fried potatoes) or just "frites" (plural form of fried) or even "une frite" which would translate as "a fry"!

  For example, if I order a large portion or "family size" portion of French Fries, I'll say "Une frite format familial" which would translate as "A fry family size".

 

I think the French people from France might say something like "pommes de terre frites". I don't think they use "French Fries" either!

And BTW, "Dessus de Cuisson encastré" is something I've never heard!  That's a direct translation of "built-in cook top" or "built-in cooking top"!

Built-ins were still a relatively new concept back then so there was probably no usual translation yet. "Dessus de cuisson" would make sense too since we do use "dessus de comptoir" as "counter top"...

 

Here, we usually say "plaque de cuisson encastrée" which would translate into "built-in cook plate".

"Surface de cuisson" which would translate into "cooking surface" is also correct but rarely used in spoken language.

 

We rarely say "Four mural" which would translate into "wall oven" but we say "four encastré" which is "built-in oven"

 

"Encastré" in other situations means "embedded".
