Frigidaire Dryer Drum Shaft

Before I finally get around to repairing my 1964 Frigidaire Filtrator dryer I have a question. The woodruff key that goes on the drun shaft is missing. Trainguy could not find one before he sent me the parts I needed. Do I need a new woodruff key? What is it's purpose? Does it help secure the drum pulley? I went to the local Ace Hardware and they have a bunch of woodruff keys in all shapes and lengths. Some are rectangular and some have a half moon shaped top.

Also there is a washer that goes on the shaft before and after the drum bearing. I have one of the washers. I don't know if it is the drum shaft thrust washer or the drum pulley thrust washer. I need help on this too?

Woodruff keys are generally available in the drawers of small hardware pieces below the screws at Lowes or at real hardware stores.

Still waiting to find out if the key is needed since the dryer had operated without one after I did repairs before in replacing the idler pulley. I guess it serves a purpose by driving the drum (thanks gansky) and should be replaced.

Rich, you should see a slot in the drum shaft and a corresponding cut-out in the pulley center. If you have the shaft and pulley off the drum itself, take them to a local hardware store and try to find the correct woodruff key that fits your shaft and pulley. I only show one washer behind the pulley so it sounds like you have all the parts you'll need besides the key.

That was an easy solution I never thought of taking both the pulley and shaft to the local Ace. I'll have to look at the pulley again. I did not remember that it had a cutout for the key. Should the key fit tight in the slot and hammer it in? Also do I have to take any special precautions in removing the drum shaft? I'm going to NYC Thursday until Monday and I'll dig it the repairs when I get back. It would be nice to have my old dryer working again since )ctober 2004 or 2005 when iI tore it apart and was trying to find parts. Getting tired of going to the laundrymay and paying 25 cents for 9 minutes of drying but I have been abe to get towels done in 18 minutes and shirts in 27 minutes.
