Hello everybody. I'm interested in a dishwasher that will replace my whirlpool gold dishwasher. It's a Frigidaire dishwasher with mechanical controls. As a matter of fact, I had a dishwasher with mechanical controls when I first moved in 1999-2000. I noticed that the start position will vary. Some dishwashers like the whirlpool with mechanical controls start when you turn the dial all the way to a certain position, while GE's start when you turn the dial just a hair. What about the Frigidaire dishwashers? Do you have to turn the dial all the way to a certain position or do you turn it just a hair? Here's an example of a dishwasher I'd like to buy, or at least the one I recommended to my dad.

Frigidaire with mechanical controls

I had one of those. It's still in the garage if you want it. Though the name dishwasher is a misnomer, it's more like a dish-wetter; and not a very good one at that.

You can do better, actually anything else is better. Maybe just sit your dishes on the floor and let the dog lick them, at least they would get clean with that method.

That Dishwasher is nothing more than a "builder's" special. Meaning they can advertise that there is a dishwasher in the home or apartment. The racks are flimsy, the unit is noisy, and as noted above they are not great at washing dishes. Sorry, I can't imagine anyone purposely buying one of those units.

The Frigidaire dishwasher I had was one just below the TOL model about 2 years ago. It wasn't much. Did an adequate job of washing the dishes if you placed them correctly, but not terrific. It had two full spray arms and a spinner on the top. So I cannot imagine that this one would do even an adequate job of cleaning.

We have that dishwasher in black in our break room. If another machine is an option I wouldn't go for this one. It's a real POS. It's not been here that long and it's already been fixed a couple of times, the lower rack is rusting and from what I'm told it doesn't clean very well. The entire thing is plastic and the last time they had it out for repair I was, of course, in the guys face watching and it looked like he could lift it with one finger. Some might see that as a benefit but there's really nothing to it.

I can't believe the MSRP is over $300. For what??

Sorry..I guess that was the original question.

And also sorry looks like the black one we had in the break room must have died because now there is a white one in there. Here is the dial. I think you turn it all the way to the Heavy Wash to start it unless you want the Rinse and Hold or the delay.

user guide

There is a link to the User guide on the machine you posted. In that guide is a picture of a dial that is different from the one we have here at work. Although the picture of the dishwasher you posted looks exactly like ours.

The dial in the User guide does not show the Rinse and Hold or the delay wash options so that one might start only after turning the dial a click or two. There is an instruction in the user guide that says to make sure the door is unlatched when your setting the timer which is probably used if you don't want to do the Heavy Wash.

It could be..

They get switched out sometimes instead of repairing them because we have so many break rooms. They must have a stock pile somewhere. The last time I paid attention (I've worked at home the past couple of weeks so haven't paid that much attention) there was a black newer one in there but today I noticed it had changed. It looks almost identical to the one in your posting. Unfortunately the one in your posting doesn't show a close up of the dial.

I'm saying that's what it looks like...

The one we have here works by turning the dial to the desired cycle and then pushing the door closed. On the one you've posted it looks like you would turn it a click or two and it would start but who knows for sure. The advertisement of your posting shows pictures and close ups of higher end models (if you're willing to use Higher End and Frigidaire in the same sentence of course). Unless you can get a close up of the dial on the one you're considering you likely won't know until you open the box. If you want to go by the User guide photo I would suggest it would start after a click or two.

Why don't you go to the store and look at it or ask Frigidaire for a close up of the dial on the machine you are considering?

I've never had a Frigidaire dishwasher

but I always wondered with the ONE dial, how you were supposed to use it. What I mean by this, as soon as you turn the dial, the dishwasher comes ON, but you have to keep moving the dial to get the setting you want. It feels very awkward to me when I used one once. I didn't realize you were supposed to leave the door unlatched while turning the dial. That makes total sense. But anyway, that dishwasher looks like a total POS. I could be wrong.

Starting with door latched

IMO it makes no difference. There is nothing in the machine that minds a brief power up and then shut down and start up again. Here is the tech sheet (where I applaud Frigidaire for doing so, many thanks! I will be buying because of that! :D )

@ Durability and wash-ability. I am not to familiar with these machines, but how do they compare with a modern BOL GE?
