Frigidaire to the Rescue!

This afternoon my dog accidentally got sick on my new queen comforter. I figured it may be a trip to the cleaners but surprisingly it didn't even fill up the 1-18.
Here's a shot of the sudsy turnover...

Yes indeed, and beautiful machine! I used to wash our California-king-sized comforter in our 1-18. They're definitely capacity champs. And hooray for not having to visit the icky machines in the laundromat!

Nah, that's just a screw I use for holding the switch in when the lid is open.

Lots of fond memories! i had that same type with a window on the lid. But the solid tub Jet action models would actualy splash gallons more water onto their lids making the view lots more active and more fun to watch. I had many pros and cons on each one but the Rapdry 1000 spin on the solid 12 pound tub Jet-Actions was what makes them my favorite top loader of all time.The Deep Action Agitators did not tangle the clothes as bad as the Three Ring Agitators did.Granted,the turbulance in the Three Ring Agitator models was deffinately more severe but the tangling was too.I think my favorite model was tied between the WXP infinate speed/High Fassion model with the built in cabinet and the WCIR model with the window lid,panel light liquid detergent and bleach dispenser door and "silver" emblem on the agitator cap.

This dryer was the 2nd dryer that I ever bought. When I bought it, the washer was already discontinued. I STUPIDLY sold it to a girl that had the washer and was looking for the dryer back in the late 70's since we had a new 1-18 and mom wanted the matching dryer. My dryer was just like in the photo in beautiful avacado! Mark

The 1-18 is a great washer for bulky items - I've had turnover and thus, washing action, stop in those if they are too full but that's why we stand over them and watch every second. In case they need "help" during the cycle!

Those High Fashion machines were absolutely the coolest - never have seen the washer but Don S. (jetaction) and I saw the dryer in brown being used as a filing cabinet and TV stand at a shop in Ohio a number of years ago. This washer had dispensers for bleach and softener inside the left-hand door and was the "WXN" series that had a variable speed option for wash and spin. It was a dreadfully complicated clutch system that bombed pretty quickly, as did those from Whirlpool/Kenmore, GE, Hotpoint, etc. I have one of the "WXN" Rollermatic mechanisms out in the shed that would be fun to play with someday...

Oh the colors, the High Fashion didn't come in Poppy that early but it wasn't far off. I have a magazine article about laundry rooms from 1969 that showed the laundry room of a woman whose husband worked for Frigidaire and she had a WCIXN washer and matching dryer in Poppy. They weren't the High Fashion models, just the standard control panel models. All porcelain - a fabulous, dreamy looking set. They called it an "experimental color" and pointed out that it was not yet available. The final color seems to be a little more orangey-brown than the photos in the article that were more true-red looking, but then, porcelain does make colors look better!

I saw those high-fashion models at the GM pavilion at the Texas State Fair. I didn't open the cabinet doors, just played with the variable speed knobs--a dream come true in my fantasy washer design schemes from when I was a kid.

With Jon Le Fever as my whitness,I had the dryer but not the washer in white.I had the WXP model but the clutch failed and I at that time had no clue how to fix it.I only wish I could have found a matching "High Fashion"laundry pair. They (FRIGIDAIRE) also made a "High Fashion" electric range.It had a shelf above the control panel that had 2 infra red lights to keep food hot!They also(briefly) made a 30 inch range with "Insta-Hot" water tap."FRIGIDAIRE bothers to build in more help!" I miss that company!!!! I still,to this day,have FRIGIDAIRE-ITUS!!!!
