G.E. washer drum

Does anyone know the part # or cost for the new GE hydrowave washer drum? Also, does it have the mounting hub that's the same for the old profiles? Our old one has a plastic drum and I'd like to upgrade it to a stainless steel one.

best bet

Go onto the GE parts website to find part numbers to cross reference by. The stainless tubs are much to expensive to buy new. Your best bet would be to salvage one from a cheap Craigslist posting, or find one at a second hand appliance store that has taken in a machine they have decided is not worth repairing. I believe the tub mounting hub has remained the same through the years. That would be your biggest hurdle on a used machine is making sure you can get the tub nut loose. You'll need a special tool to remove it without damaging it. [this post was last edited: 12/2/2013-13:33]

All the mounting nut is that it's really a large nut. My dad has a wrench up to 2 inches!

There are several Youtube videos on how to remove the nut and tub, and you will see why this special spanner wrench is needed. This nut tends to get corroded, and just a regular open end or adjustable wrench will most likely just round it off. The spanner wrench goes all the way around the nut, preventing this from happening.

Engaging your Caps Lock key before repeating your request really isn't likely to help you get your answer...

Perhaps sharing your model/serial number might. Odds are that is needed to find the proper part number. Maybe you didn't get a response because of that.

Your first reply gave you your answer actually though, go to the GE parts page and type in model number and you can find the information yourself.

In general the folks around the site here are shirt-off-their-back helpful kinds of folks. But why impose on them then when the information you need is as close as your local Google search bar?

WASHER MODEL #

You Need the model of your current washer so someone might be able to cross reference your washers tub to a SS tub, it is on the top edge of your control panel.

To remove the mounting nut you really need an impact wrench, as they are very tough to remove after just a few years use because of corrosion.

Balance ring changed...

Somewhere along the line GE changed the balance ring to a taller, more streamlined look, like the one in the picture. I believe the steel part of the tub has remained the same, but depending on which balance ring you have, you'd have to switch them, assuming you can get the screws loose that attach them together.

Rough estimate is about $120 including shipping. It's very heavy and oversized, so a large chunk of that is shipping charges. I originally purchased the drum to do a conversion like you, but I ended up selling my GE.
One thing to consider is you can sell your old drum to recoup your expenses should you decide to green light your project.
Let me know what your thoughts are.

I might be able to remove part/ parts of the balance ring on the new drum and remake the top for it to fit because ours is about 17 years old and it has done a great job for us. I would accept it any day for our really cheap front load washer that shakes the whole house and constantly breaks.

I would strongly suggest you remove the agitator and make sure you can loosen the tub nut, before you go any further. On a machine as old as yours, it could be corroded beyond easy removal. I believe it is reverse thread as well, meaning you'll have to try and turn it clockwise to loosen it. Good luck.

I have checked ours and it's in excellent condition. I really would appreciate it, but I'll try to clean off the nasty ring around the tub and see if I can find one for free. Thank you for posting anyway. I have not tried to remove it, because all the spin cycles have really tightened it down and that agitator is quite tough to remove. I'll try my best to remove it and post later. Thank you.
