Well here in the UK Petrol is your equivilant of $7.21 a gallon. Diesel slightly more. So it aint that bad in USA compared with other countries. Fuel here is very pricey including home gas and electric which has gone up about 80-100% in the last 18 months.

Steve, I'm curious to know what a European person's opinion would be of this situation. I mean, any time this subject comes up, wherever it comes up, a European can always be counted upon to point out the glaring differences between your prices and ours. What is pointed out is correct, but what is the feeling about it in Europe, say if you were to discuss it around the water cooler at work? What I mean is, when prices fluctuate and go up here, we are outraged, and in my opinion justifably so. In Europe, however, it seems to me that fuel and energy prices have always been ridiculously inflated, but I've never really understood why that is, and unless I'm missing something you all seem to accept it as a fact of life. It's particularly puzzling given how much closer you all are to the majority of the supplies. What's up with all this anyway?

I think we in the US can't imagine such high gas prices, but they on the other hand always seem shocked and appalled when I speak of our healthcare costs.

Maybe it all evens out in the end?

Portland, Or Gas prices varry so much

From the lauralhurst area at 2.95 at shell at 39th and S E Stark to Troutdale Flying J which is the by far least expensive at 2.57<----that is where I filled up and it was still 26.00 in my Honda Civic.Although alot of the world does pay more, and correct me if I am wrong, do people make bigger saleries as well? I understood that everything is higher. My box of German Persil in Seattle, Wa when I boght it three weeks ago was 46.95 for a BIG-BIG box. when I was in Seattle 17 Aug I saw gas at Shell for 3.33 a galon. I looked for good and cheap gas and found it off of I-5 in Marriesville for 2.89 and thought that I was getting some kind of deal. OH! I ve got it! I could have my car run on all of my used rinse water.Just a thought. :)

Yes, I agree about this manufactured auto-terror thing...

Particularly when it's done in such a noncreative fashion.

Scott, for me the discussions about gas prices are somewhat hilarious. Gas in the US is cheap or a bit less cheap. I found it a little upsetting though when our government decided to sell gas to the US when prices went up a while ago. It was to prevent that the price of gas in the US went over $3.-. The result was we started paying almost $7.-!

low taxes and big oil....

Hi Louis,
I really do not care what the price of gasoline is. The higher the price of gasoline, the sooner we find an alternative. To me the price is not really the point. The issue I find so interesting is the fact that the price of gasoline always seems to drop a few cents, whenever Mr. Bush's approval rating falls. This time the price drop was dramatic, and just in time for the fall elections, of which the republicans are very worried about loosing "seats" in our government.
The loss of power in the USA is the result of the loss of "seats" in our government.

GOP and Oil company CEO's

Does anyone notice how coincidental it is that we are 7 weeks away from the midterm elections. The GOP led congress is at stake and suddenly gas prices fall? What is BUSH? an Oilman,What is Cheney? an Oilman. Who are their biggest supporters? The CEO's of energy and gas companies. I am convinced this is a ploy on the part of energy companies,Pushed by Karl Rove and the Bush White House to lower gas prices to help boost the GOP's horrendous approval ratings. I truly hope Americans don't fall for this BS. We need balance of power back in this country and right now the GOP has a hold on all levels of gov't..As Newt Ginrich said back in 1994, "Absolute power corrupts"!!

Also: it's past labor day and gas prices traditionally drop with the demand.

Oil's headed towards $60/barrel as the mideast and africa cool off, not to mention the hurricane season didn't happen.

Realize we're trading *futures* here, so a lot of it is speculation driven. With a quiet mid east, a quiet Africa, and no hurricanes to wipe out refining capacity, people don't think oil's really worth that much anymore...

It's a market driven product, just like anything else. If people speculate that the price of orange juice will go up because of frost, the cost of orange juice rises.

I think everyone give Bush credit where it isn't due. Some folks think he is absolutely stupid, yet he and his cronies can somehow control the world.

Rather than believe in conspiracies, I buy the market concept, here's a link for anyone interested. From the "pro-Bush" ha ha msnbc camp!

I don't think Bush is stupid

Bush, like Reagan, is a front man for corporate interests - the power is all behind the throne.

Bush lacks Reagan's finesse, Reagan's charm, Reagan's knowledge and appreciation of the common man, and Reagan's grasp of the power of ideas, but I don't think Bush is stupid. Petulant, dishonest, and emotionally inmature, but not stupid.

I do think he plays stupid sometimes to appeal to a certain kind of voter, but he knows what he's doing when he does that.

And yes, I think we'll see a price increase after the elections. I may be stupid, but I ain't naive ;-)
