I think the answer is to take the government out of "marriage" entirely and adopt civil union for everyone, straight or gay, and make it the same, straight or gay. And then if a religion wants to celebrate something else, the government can stay out of that.

For example, you can get an annulment in the Catholic Church in cases that can't get a civil annulmment. No sweat. Then if some religion wants to define "marriage" as between man and woman - the government should stay out of it.

That's the way

pretty much all of the West does it, and it works just fine.
If the hate-filled christianist churches don't want to grant us their 'god's' blessing, fine. But how dare these despicable republicans deny us basic human rights!

We may not be *BETTER* than *THEY* are ; but we are no worse

Funny thing is the Christian faith did not consider marriage a sacrament or a religious "thang" for a great number of years. It was considered to be a secular matter.

....and yes in the beginning (of church marriage) same-gender couples received the same blessing as did all others.

You don't see this icon hanging in churches of my brand and flavor of Voo-doo (religion). [But it's in MY HOUSE DAMN IT!]. Any guesses why that may be? *FEH* No, it's
not "suggestive". It blurts it right out, methinks!

UHM Why do you need it?

Orthodox Christians make the sign on the cross by putting together the firt three fingers and folding back the last two (thumb, pointer and middle finger merge; ring and pinkie fingers folded back) This sybolizes the Holy Trinity [Father, son and Holy Spirit] which is furhter symbolic of body mind and soul working in concert to create what we think of as the human being. Now those two last fingers (pointing back at YOU) are symbolic of the two natures of Christ; human, and Divine. Just as J.C. was said to be both SO ARE WE ALL!

Similarly incense belongs only to G-d. It sybolizes prayers rising to her (him). Yet in my brand of Voo-doo, the priest censes (blesses with incense) everyone in the congregation. Why? BECAUSE COLLECTIVELY WE ARE G-D since there is a bit of G-d in all of us [no matter how evil one may come across]!

So let's not feel the need to look to others for a neasure of our self-worth. They will not in the forseeable future EVER give us their blessing. We need to find strength in ourselfves and as a community and a group.

The ignorant masses may or may not not have anything of insight to offer the world. Their creativity and energy is invested in raising little DNA replication (mutations?) of themselves. Our creativity and energy, however is free to be harvested for other things. Perhaps some of those are higher-level things that may acutally better the human race. It's a possiblity.

Just because they hate us does NOT allow us the luxury of hating them. Hate destroys those who do it. Instead, bless then away from you in their ignorance while understanding their way-of-thiniking is limited and rigid. Think of it as having a special-needs child. There is no room for anything but love no matter how frustrating it may be to those who have a clearer throught process.

If this posting comes across as arrogant or haughty or whatever other adjectives come to mind, keep in mind that intent and tone and attitude don't accurately convey in writing. FLAME AWAY AT ME IF NEED BE. I'm a big girl and I can take it. Just use a little KY and go slowly. Now that I m in a rental apartment the walls are thin and the neighbors hear everything.

This is not a case of simple "adelphopoiia."

i.e the making of siblings... brothers or bother and sister or sisters.

I have been saying since the San Francisco marriages of a couple of years ago that I would never want to get "married" anyway. A civil union that provides my partner and I the same benefits as a heterosexual couple is all that's necessary.

When you start talking marriage, you start talking churchy and sacramental, and I want no part of that. I sure don't need a child molester doing mumbo jumbo over my relationship to supposedly legitimize it. It's difficult to get more hypocritical than that.

You know I really don't have a dog in this fight, but I do take issue with stereotyping the Church. There are 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in this world. Of which millions are religious as in of the cloth. Of those millions there have only been a handfull that fall into the molestor catagory. I might point out that these molestors are in all religions not just the Catholic Faith. Some have been documented in the Morman Faith, some of the Jahova Witness sect, and some of plain old Baptist/Methodist faith.

What makes it so popular to accuse the Chruch at this time is plain ole down to earth greed. The Church has deep pockets. If the "Light of the Hidden Doom" church had money, I would double dog dare you there would be accusations.

I understand passive/agressive behaviors, but it seems that a group trying so hard to overcome stereotypes and prejudices should not stoop to name calling to get their point across. It detracts and weakens your stance and makes you less the victim you wish to portray.

Name Calling and expletives

Maytag,
You got it. I get enticed now and then into participating in what I think might be political discussion on this site. But then the ranting, name calling and expletives just kind of take over and I kick myself again for having bothered. I really do want to listen to different points of view - but instead we just get venomous tirades, photoshopped images and quotes that haven't first been run by the major fact checkers. It is so frustrating.

Even the post that kind of tripped your trigger - initially a "fair" thought was tendered - this gentleman felt that a civil union was preferable. But then he sort of went off. I think he is essentially a good guy who just gets swept up some times. Every time you slip in to name calling, Rush Limbaugh chuckles and says "See what I told you about liberals." Y'all take care.

Well, the catholic church officials moved the molesters around from parish to parish so many times when they KNEW the molestations were taking place, that it would be difficult to estimate how many were/are doing the molestations. There were MANY, and the church officials were aware of the molestations for over 50 years. Just one would be too many to ignore, yet these same crimes were commited decade after decade, even though church officials were well aware of it. Where I live they shipped the molesters off to Boston, several states away, where they could commit even more molestations, as parents did not know who they were, and what they would do to their children. The church swept the whole thing under the rug and ignored the situation for decades. They have no free pass with me.

The catholic church is a business. Nothing more and nothing less. The church leaders did nothing to prevent the molestations because it would have been bad for business. New cases of molestations roll in each day. Some decades old, some recent. The church is still fighting to get out of paying the settlements to the molestation victims. It's bad for business....

And you give me a link to an attorney's website and expect me to give them validity? come on he doesn't give a tootle about the victims. He cares about the payout in the end.

Painters

You're both painting with a pretty broad brush. Catholics, Attorneys. Now, I don't make it a practice to socialize with attorneys, or catholics, with any frequency, but it just kind of worked out that way. But I have found both to be fun when we steam some crab, have some sour dough bread and a decent white wine. They didn't seem evil at all. Was I taking risk?

Rick talked about the RCC's hierarchy, specifically. The claim that the church's pedophile problems are due to its "deep pockets" implies a price tag can be put on child molestation. IMO this view is absolutely repugnant and absurd. The church has a very well documented, 1400 year history of protecting child molesters.

And rocket, I never said anything about catholics. What I said was about the catholic church. That would be in reference to the church leaders. Not the followers.
