When replacing this item (WE1M462), does it simply press down onto the drum shaft? The worn sleeve pulled off easily enough, I suppose because it's worn, but the replacement doesn't go on so easy over the retaining ring at end of the shaft. I'm leery of forcing the new sleeve for fear of cracking it. Is the retaining ring supposed to come off? I don't see an obvious way to do that.

Glen,

I'd be personally interested in all that you are doing to your dryer.

I have one that probbaly needs bearings in that it is making an awful noise and the drum revolves in a jerky fashion!

Feel free to write or post here, (PLEASE!)

Yes, the clip comes off, then you slide the bearing on the shaft. When you use this new bearing you won't need to use the washers and clips upon reassembly.

Check the bearing socket in the back of the dryer to make sure it's not worn or egg shaped. If it is you either need to replace it or take it out and turn it 180 degrees then put it back together.

Thanks, Jason. I got the ring off ... in four pieces. There are no other clips or washers involved. Does the ring have to be replaced? I don't suppose a rubber o-ring can be used since this is a heat-exposure area. Model DS4500EB0WW, about 8 years old. The rear bearing socket is OK. Got the dryer free, front glides worn/missing, front support worn enough to need replacement, door liner worn (as if they were drying rocks), element bad. Completely disassembled, cleaned-up, replaced the worn parts, restrung the element, oughta be like new.

No, you don't need the ring. Just make sure the front felt is in good shape. Make sure seal on the lint duct is in the right place if it's there. If not, put one there. Also make sure the seal where the lint duct mates to the front panel is there.

All done.  Overlooked a wire on the door switch, it came up dead.  Then missed two wires on the heating element.  Amateur at work, LOL.  I cannot engage the belt via the front access, arm apparently is too short, or something.   :-|   Leastwise the side panels are removable.

Did you use the WE12M29 or the WE12X82 belt? It calls for the 29 but if you pull the arm over hard enough you can get the 82 on there. The idler pulley may hang up on the motor bracket though. It can be done from the front. You should see my arms after 3 or 4 GE's in one day.

I didn't change the belt. Probably should have what with all the ruckus involved to do it, but it has just a few small areas of slight wear on one edge, no cracks. The dryer is tentatively planned for use in a rental house and won't be used yet for months other than whatever playing I may do with it in the interim ... unless I end up selling it.
