'Air Sweep'......little motor made the vents oscillate the air fins side to side, rather than one set position blowing air in one direction......

may be just a gimmick, but I liked the way it worked as keeping the air moving...

That little GE is a GEM!!!  Talk about ice cold air!  And quiet on top of it all while running!

I remember the "Air Sweeps" actually having a little fan that was turned by the output air.  The fan would turn and the gears would do the air sweep.

I would love to have that little GE.  It looks to be in mint condition.

The ad for the GE says a side piece is missing, but I can't see what they're talking about from the pictures. Maybe one of the sliding filler pieces is gone. No biggie if so. I would get it if it were local.

I think the first series of the Fasionette line had four little circular vents on the top where the air discharged.

They came in White, Avocado, Coppertone, and Harvest I think that's where the "Fasionette" name came from. You chose the color of the A/C to match your rooms decor or Shag Carpeting.

Cool

units!! I miss the old names like "Air Temp", and "air sweep" too.
I remember looking on new car dealers lots for window stickers that said "air conditioned by Air Temp", Frigidaire, or Philco. Not so many cars on the lots had it in those days.

My grandparents had a Fashionette, 5,000 btu IIRC. The unit was designed so the window almost bisected the unit. This made weight fairly evenly distributed front to back so it was easier to install than most units. My experience was the same: It blew very cold air and was quite quiet. At some point in my teens the squirrel cage came out of alignment and ever so slightly rubbed up against the housing. Nothing I did kept it in place for more than a couple of weeks. The rubbing seemed really loud because the unit was so quiet.

One thing I liked about it was that the two top vents could be independently adjusted to blow really far to the left or right... much further off center than most units today can.Vents out the top also gave pretty good draft-free circulation.

I think one of my cousins has it today. Wouldn't be surprised if it's sitting in a window, pumping out frigid air as I write this.

This was my first AC unit. The department store where I worked had a sale on reconditioned or returned ac units one summer. The major appliance department was across the aisle from housewares and I looked at those units all day until the late afternoon when the man I had been talking to about them said I should take one home and try it. So we put it on a 30-60-90 day payment plan and I put it in the trunk of my car.  I had a room in a friend's house and it cooled it beautifully. It did not throw air very far, but it was very quiet. When we moved to an apartment, I took it home and my father used it in his office. After he used it for 14 years, My sister and her husband took it to their house and used it in their upstairs bedroom. It was still working in the 90s when, during a thunderstorm, their crazy dog pulled the cord out of the unit during a thunderstorm. Unfortunately, it was not plugged in at the time. I think they gave it to a relative who was able to replace the cord and keep it going. It was definitely a long-lived, good performing unit.
