While the baskets reduced the freezer capacity, they sure gave easy access to items in the freezer. Compared to freezers with a side swing door which had to be opened a full 90 degrees to pull out a basket, this was a winning design. I think the book for ours said the freezer capacity was 185 lbs. How that was figured, I don't know.
So this model doesn't have the serpentine coils on top. Does that mean it's not hot gas defrost? I'm leaning toward a yes answer.
I could live without the spinning crisper that this one lacks since it does still have a butter conditioner.
They'd have to knock 90% off the price before I'd consider it, but being located in the greater Hipstertown USA metro area they could end up getting a lot more than any of us here would ever pay for it.

Someone will buy it. Money doesn't seem to mean much to them out there--but I still doubt it's going to go for $2500. I've seen people happily spend 1200-1500 for this stuff out in LA, though. About 6 months ago, someone on ebay successfully pulled 1500 for a Turquoise '65 Frigidaire with similar styling. Which makes me happy--I may have to try for a king's ransom for my '63 if ever I should want to sell it!

Seeing the freezer, that's the 18 cu ft. model, as that one had the twin shelves in the freezer compartment.
It's not only on ebay now, but the CL ad has been re-posted with price reduced to a still ridiculous $950.

Yes this IS a HGD ref, and while the first GE Frost Guard refs did have serpentine evaporator coils in the top of the Fresh Food section this feature had nothing to do whether the freezer section was defrosted with hot gas, resistance electric heaters, or most often just manually defrosted.
GEs first bottom freezer Frost Guard refs [ 1958 or 9 ], their first top freezer FG refs approximately 1960-63 and their first upright FG freezers 1960-63 were all hot gas defrost.
The GE ref for sale is one of the very desirable 34" wide foam insulated FD models. When GE introduced this ref they jumped ahead of Frigidaire in refrigerator design at least 6 years and ahead of Whirlpool about four years. GE continued to make this refrigerator till around 1970 and I will vote it the best preforming and built of the 1960s, it is one of very few Frost Free refs that is practical to have and use today.

The previous ebay listing for $49.99/reserve not met did not launch the stratospheric bidding war the buyer was expecting, and ended with a top bid of $51.
Now it's relisted starting at $999 with BIN $1,299. The seller is stubbornly unrealistic. Like, what part of $51 do you not understand?
