GE Gas Ranges

In the early 1980's, when GE brought out their gas ranges (comparable products were offered with the Hotpoint name, too), who actually built these products? Did a GE facility build them or were they out-sourced? I've eyed this nice one for several weeks - love the brushed chrome and black, the fact that the oven is self-cleaning (and thus better insulated), and the analog controls for the oven (digital crap on the right side is only clock/timer); not to mention that this had to be one of the last they offered with a fluorescent lamp on the console. If I could figure out a place to store this range, I'd go for it - unless there's something inherently "bad" about these products.

Can anyone offer any information or adivce?

That looks very similar to my (probably lower end model) GE gas self cleaning. Mine is a 1988 model in white, slightly different dash display (the older rotating clock numerals) but looks to be the same basic stove. I think I remember being told that they were made by Roper. I haven't had any trouble with it, though it is not a heavily used primary stove, and the trim has deteriorated a bit. Obviously nowhere near as sturdy as my 50's stoves. But operationally seems ok, if not higher end.

Early GE gas ranges were sourced from Tappan, then sourced from a company in Mexico that still makes their gas and electric ranges today. I think the name of the company is Mabe or similar.

Your range looks great!  I like the analog controls - forget about those pesky motherboards...

John just confirmed that mine is one of the Tappan-sourced stoves.

Glad you like it Lawrence... like I said, mine has had very limited use.

I was given a copy of a Family Tree of Appliance Manufactures by a friend and it was scary as to who made what. Some did mostly stoves, some did mostly refrigerators and some just washers and dryers, etc. and put different logos on them. I wished I could find that copy but it showed that only a few companies actually made them and the rest put their name on them and tried to make them feel they are the biggest and the best.

I was going to comment, both of htose looked extremely "similar" to the Tappan SC gas range I had in a houyse I built in late 1984 (moved in March 1985) and was transferred with job by January, 1986.  (10 months!!!)

Hey cma, where is the data plate? Just checked on mine, it's not inside the oven door or the lower drawer... if it's on the back of the stove, it could be a challenge, the way this one was installed, it looks like they built the cabinets around the stove... with very little clearance.

I believe its under the top cover of the 4 burners, it lifts up and there is a label on the left side.

On some Tappans, there is a cross brace under the top, and the model tag is there.

There it is under the burner top, a tag on the left side, it is Model JGBP26GEJ5WH and manufacturer 052818.
