GE Power Shower

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I wonder if this is a model with the cute little mini spray arm under the silverware basket. The "power scrub" I think it was called.

I found one of these in the early 80s. It ran but had a golf ball sized rust hole in the tub very near the motor so....

But before sending it off to the metal recyclers I was sure to take out the mini spray arm and hose that fed it along with a few other parts.

Power-Shower was the mini wash arm under lid that sprayed water downwards.

Silver-Shower was a small wash arm off main lower that directed spray of water up towards silverware basket. IIRC this was a TOL feature that came with General Electric's last gasp of top loading dishwashers. Like everyone else they soon ditched that design in favor of loading from front.

Rust holes at bottom of these GE Mobile Maid tubs were common enough. Mine came with one as well. Patched it up with JB Weld marine bond and that was that, it's held up ever since.

Problem was the inner tub liner used by GE (Plastisol) wasn't most durable. One crack or dent and water worked its way between liner and metal outer tub lead to rust that could spread like cancer.

Why GE stuck with Plastisol long as they did for dishwasher interiors one does not know.

GE used plastisol dishwasher interiors, because

It’s greatly reduced cost to manufacture, and most of all because it greatly reduced expensive damage claims because of porcelain chipping.

Porcelain chip complaints nearly put KitchenAid out of business, we used to scrap so many brand new dishwashers because they had chips tanks. And the problem got really bad when they KD 18 series dishwashers were released because they took the gasket off the edge of the door and customers would drop a dish on the edge of the door and made a nasty chip and there was no way you could get out of having to replace the entire door in warranty.

This is why whirlpool and Frigidaire cleverly went to a molded plastic inner door because of the durability of it.

GE was always a low level dishwasher until the 80s when they actually got serious about building dishwashers and one that actually cleaned and was fairly durable.

This looks like the US version of my Canadian Talisman GE dishwasher - it more than likely has the 'Silver Shower'.   I could use that silverware basket - mine's worn out....
