GE Washer WWA7070GALWH Noise

Ok next on my "fix it" list is my washer. Does anyone know what that noise is...it's in the background and sounds louder in person than on the video. I guess I should have left the lid down so it was easier to hear but it makes this loud "WAH WAH WAH WAH WAH" noise. It doesn't do it all the time and if I stop the machine and then restart it,most times it will go away.

Is it the clutch? It's agitating and spinning just fine so I don't think it's the transmission? It also only makes the noise on "Normal" agitation speed, not "Gentle".

I don't think there is anything to be concerned about.....

one of mine makes an odd whirring sound that starts off low and then gets a bit louder as if winding up, stops, and then does it again, over and over....

to a point, if it ain't broke, don't fix it....for now, its working for you....sit back and enjoy it....

haha, yes it works fine. I'm just OCD when it comes to machines. When I worked on cars I had to have everything running perfectly. lol. Just the way I am.

I was just curious if that is the clattering clutch that people talk about.

my '93 GE

My '93 would do that from time to time. I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I think that's a GE trait. I miss it dearly.

Which everyone here helped us fix several years back has always sounded like that.

The new (1974!) one we're working on does, too.

I'm sure somebody will be along soon who can tell us. Don't know if it's a bug or a feature.

GE FF Washer Noise

I don't hear anything wrong in your video, and unlike your dryer noise fixing what ever slight problem it will be a lot more involved than fixing your dryer was.

 

GE FF Washers can vary from one to another in operating sounds, if you want a really quiet washer I would sound insulate the washer like I did with our 1-18. You could make your washer amazingly quiet if you want to.

motor noise

sometimes,if conditions-including line voltage,are just right,my '81 filter flo will "float"the motor rotor in the stator "air gap"producing kind of a grumbling noise

I always thought filter-flos were noisy when agitating....

when in actuality, its the filter flume splashing that makes all the noise.....

if you ever have the back off, pinch off the filter hose going up the back from the pump, amazing how quiet these machines really are.....

sound insulation will help in a lot of ways, even a piece of insulation under the machine will absorb a lot of the hollow/echo....

most times of chatter heard from the clutch is during low speed, when those little fingers stick out and hit the arm holding it in place, but as mentioned, no two are alike, one can be somewhat quiet compared to another....

GE Filter Flo Noise

That's normal for the washer to do that. My Frigidaire does a woo-woo sound during agitation. Basically, it's all normal.

Fixing the clutch assemb., if you had a problem, won't be as easy as fixing the GE dryer.

 

Sounds normal to me.  I miss the  business like sound of a FF washer.  One knew there was serious cleaning going on in that washer . From the smooth but determined sounds of the motor and clutch, the splashing of the water into the filter pan, to the loud sound of the brake after a spin  (ka-a-a-LUCK).  Even the sound of the water gushing as it fills, and fills,.... and fills...... and FILLS, and the occasional off balance tub that scraped a bit of porcelain off the outer tub, these are all sounds that remind us of a dutiful and comforting washer that even has it's own unique smell.

 

Clothes that enter a GE FF washer with an attitude that there shit doesn't stink, soon find out they are no match.  Most clothes come clean in a GE FF not so much out of water and agitator action, as it is out of fear of having to go through another cycle.

Yeah you can't even hear the sound in the video at all actually. LOL. I'll have to post another one when I do laundry again. It's a lot louder than the normal sounds that's for sure. But yes, I do love the sounds of the FF.

spin sounds

Another sound I miss is the spin cycle. What I like about the spin cycle is that rhythmic suspension clanking sound when it gets up to full speed depending what you put into the machine. This is especially true for towels and jeans.

FF smell

Oh my gosh. That reminds me. The utility room in my grandparents' house always had this odd smell.
That must've been it! It was from their GE Filterflo!
It was like a heavy musty smell with detergents mixed in.

I'm really surprised nobody yelled and screamed at GE for that.
Were there no 1st or 2nd floor laundry setups yet back then?
I could NOT imagine that smell being in our kitchen where our Maytags were in our house.

Yes!

I think because of the setup, it held onto smells. When I got mine it smelled like Tide...big time. Of course I cleaned it out and i don't use Tide so the smell went away. It does get kind of a musty smell if it sits long...mixed with detergent. Very distinctive. Not really offensive, but noticeable.

distinct tranny smell

I like the distinct tranny smell. GE had everything going for them. When GE completely redesigned their laundry line in 1995, Quality went way downhill. Before that, the filter-flos were nightmares. Not because of the performance, but because of the trannies leaking oil on the clothes and floor. On the post FF's, you can still smell the tranny oil during operation just as we have on the ff's.
