GE HYDRO-WAVE
some models has electronic timer, some has mechanical,
does't have that big transmission box also motor connected to the agitator with belt and poly, motor turns in both directions, extremely quiet, plastic tub, stainless steal basket with recent GE agitator(auger+ vanes at the bottom),
note: some HYDRO-WAVE models featured with infuser instead of traditional agitator, if so no big change,
all models has fabric softener and liquid bleach dispenser, no detergent dispenser and no soap drawer!
some has precise fill option which sense the load first and then fills,
also ribbed basket (vertical lines),
has separated drain pump, no circulation at all!
that was some ordinary features of GE Hydro-wave washers

We had one of these for just over a year. Machine was very gentle on clothes due to the unique way it agitated. As I remember, agitator had a large arc (similar to Speed Queen but possibly even greater) and was always in the gentle cycle. There was no regular or heavy speed. Most items came out clean but very large loads were iffy due to the manner in which it washed. Trying to wash a comforter was a disaster! Even on the longest setting, without stopping to rearrange the comforter, there would be places that never got wet! We'd bring the comforter to the next door neighbor and wash it in their Maytag when needed. Ended up trading in the set on a Maytag set like our neighbors.

They are quite a bit different. Like stated above the new wash system is way more quiet than the older direct drive. My neighbor upstairs from me has one and there's no question when they are doing laundry lol.
Mine cleaned very well. I did not have any problems with my comforter at all. It has a corkscrew agitator and it pulled the comforter down and up, albeit slow, but it cleaned fine. Washing comforter in traditional top load machines is always a challenge anyway, especially on older machines. There are just too small for it.

Hey Joeypete, I agree with you.
I agree with Joeypete too. I had a GE GTWN2800 for 2 years and 8 mo. and the only reason I got rid of it was due to our extreme drought here in Calif. During the time I used this machine I was always happy with its performance and never had any problems, what so ever. No strange noises or unusual peformance issues. The only complaint was that it used way too much water at a time when we in Calif. are being required to cut water usage by at least 25%. BTW, people on this site keep referring to these traditional GE washers as Hydrowave, but if you go the GE's website and read the Q&A, GE states that they are not Hydorwave, but traditional agitator system washers, that GE refers to as "dual action agitator". This doesn't make any real difference,but I did find that piece of info interesting, for whatever its worth.[this post was last edited: 7/15/2015-13:19]
GE's "Hydrowave" refer's to the long slow wash action of it's drive system, not whether the machine has an agitator or an impeller. The Hydrowave models came out in 2006. Their previous run of top loaders from 1995 to 2006 would be considered their "traditional" wash action models with the fast short stroke. See the following GE video where they are comparing traditional to Hydrowave at the 2:10 minute mark in the video. Both machines have a full dual action agitator but one is a Hydrowave and the other is "traditional".
I stand corrected! I was going off the answer to a question on the GE website Q&A, the answer was given by a GE employee. Sorry for any misinformation I may have given.
