Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

When you do finally find the solution, please post it here.

I grew up with an Australian assembled machine, i think it was similar underneath. (multi-matic?)

Our machine was absolutely dreadful at balancing, right from brand new. it shook the whole house when spinning, and most days getting it to spin took many attempts, usually it just spun a little then shut off. (out of balance.) Every now and then, about once a week, it would overheat from so many start attempts, then you would have to let it cool down, then press the reset and try again.
I don't know how my mother put up with it. It was rebuilt by factory approved repairers twice (after other faults) and the balancing never improved.

I now own an older Frigidaire washer with the pulsamatic mechanism (which is very similar), and it has never gone off balance once.

The offending machine went to god decades ago but I'd love to know what its problem was.

Chris.

Joe. My parents had the same machine, but I think it was the Custom Imperial and it had a window in the lid so you could see all the washing action. See if someone out on the club could sell you a new lid. It was a great machine, washed, rinsed and spun well. It was replaced with at 1-18 which was good not at great as the RapidDry 1000. I am not sure when this machine came out, but I think it was in either 1968 or 1969?

Funny you should mention the lid. Mine has the window and that rubber gasket they used around the inside edge to try to act as a muffler for all the noise.
I will remember to keep an eye out for a window lid for Joe.

The absolute best window lid EVER was the factory issued Demo lid which was a solid piece of plexi-glass with a round concave (towards the bottom when closed) area to fit the tub opening. As the water would splash up against the insides of the lid it would run down the concave part and drip back down on the top of the agitator cap.

We found one back when Steve 1-18,Rhinnie,PeterH and I went on our expedition to Jessup, in south Georgia.

So Steve 1-18 has the only one I've ever seen installed on his soild-tub Rollermatic. Fantastic!

Window Lid

Yes, I thought about a window lid. I thought about having my lid modified into one as well. I think I'd prefer to have an original style window lid, so if anyone here has a white one they want to sell, just let me know.

Joe -

What a very neat find. I am glad for you! I recently noticed in a post a while back that you suggested we get together and talk shop. I TOTALLY agree - you're welcome here anytime so long as you can tolerate a garage full of Kenmores and an occasional Whirlpool, I'd like to see your machines in person too sometime. It wouldn't surprise me if I wind up with a Rollermatic in the not too distant future myself.
